Got a friend that needs help. He is only 15 years old and is already 6'4" with long arms and still growing. His draw length is 32" while his current compound only goes up to 29" or 30". He went to the On Target Archery shop in Canton yesterday and the only bows that could fit his draw length were $800 bare. So now, the cheaper option for bowhunting would be a crossbow, but considering he has never been into crossbows, neither him or I know what is good. Any suggestions as to what is a good crossbow between $400-$600?

Darton

Also Bear Encounter compound is under that price and adjusts for a 32 inch draw

I will suggest the Bear to him, but I think he has some sort of dislike to a Bear of which I dont know why. Just turns down any sort of Bear suggestion normally. Whats a good model of a Ten Point or Darton?

If you are near Cabelas, go there. They will let you shoot different ones.i saw several in the Bargain Cave at the FW store a couple of weeks ago that were marked down. Iut join www.crossbownation.ciimand get some insight there. I just got the Matrix 380 and love it so far.

Wicked Ridge Invader HP.

Check them out and read the online reviews on them and then compare them to bows that cost several hundred dollars more and I think you will see what a bargin they are. They aint the smallest or the fastest or the latest technology but in my opinion they are the best bang for the buck by far. Also look at who makes them (TenPoint) and you will see why they have the reputation that they do.

Would anyone consider any of the Barnetts good? My neighbor has the Penetrator and it does good.

I spent a lot of time playing with every crossbow I could get my hands on over the last few months. The Barnetts are functional but were some of the worst handling bows I played with. Everybodys likes and dislikes are different though.

Bullseye, I have both the Penetrator and Hellcat from Barnett and they do everything I've asked of them. Comparing to rifles, I'd say they are like buying a Savage which is very functional though not the best..

I know he is big, but a 15 year old is still a kid. I would be very careful putting him up in a tree with a crossbow. I do not hunt with one, but I have heard some horror stories of those things going off on accident (remember, they are "loaded" and ready to go off at all times while hunting).

I have never had a problem letting my boys hunt alone with a bow even as young as 11 years old. In my mind, bows are the SAFEST weapon for a young hunter to use, even above a bolt action rifle. I always walked them to their tree, hooked up their safety harnesses, and let them go. I would have been a nervous wreck if they had a cocked crossbow up there.

Maybe I am over worrying about it, but I just like kids with bows for some reason.

Mathews Z7 Bow for Whitetail and Hogs
Remington R-15 .223 REM for predators
I also like to "hunt" sporting clays with my Benelli SuperSport!

Thank you. Miller, I understand where you're coming from but his dad would whoop his hind end if he did something even remotely unintelligent. lol.

I have the Barnett C5 Wildcat, works good for me, killed a doe at 58 yards with it last season.

Not the best out there probably, but I have had no problems with mine

He has ended up, or is about to, trade his uncle for a Wicked Ridge Invader. Good quality or no?

Well, he's back on the market. His uncle fell through with the deal. Guess he likes it too much to give up. He plans to buy a Wicked Ridge Invader once his current compound is sold.
