Im goin to a buddy of mines ranch this weekend and was told I could kill as many hogs as I wanted! Plannin on taking my .17 for predators but does anybody have any experience with shooting hogs with one? Just curious if the ear shot would drop them?

A buddy of mine dropped two 3 weeks ago with his 17. It wouldn't have been the gun of choice but it was what was in his truck. He hit them both in the ear. The 100lb dropped right away and the 250lb swam laps in the tank for a few minutes before he died too.

Iset up one last week (Mossberg 817) for my 14 year old son for varmints, predators, and hogs. I know it isn't ideal for the hogs - but to be perfectly honest (thought I'd never say it about an animal but hogs is just different) I could care less if it goes off somewhere and dies as long as it quits eating my corn and scaring off my deer!

It's not my first choice but I was just curious to know if the shot presents itself while predator hunting if it was doable... My buddies dad told me that they have so many on their property that he said when he shoots them and they go in some thick stuff or he doesnt find them right away he usually just lets the coyotes have them! I just have never got to hunt hogs before so im kinda pumped!

If ya got a bigger gun i would take it. I know nobody seems to care about hogs but personally i like pork as much as venison. Get every one you can and make some sausage! Good luck on your hunt.

I gotta go with Hoytman on this one, if you have a bigger gun take it, they are just pigs, but they do fill a freezer to, and some good eating

You bet!
That pig meat is great. Nice and clean. I like it better than venison and it's easier to cook. Doesnt dry out as much.
It ain't easy being me.

CW, that little 17 will just get scared and evaporate before it hits the hog!! LOL..
All joking aside, I went from .223 to .243 and now frequently use a 7-08 just because of all the pigs I see when predator hunting. I know that 17 can be really accurate, and you're gonna need that because your margin of error will be much smaller on a tough animal than it would be with a larger caliber.
If it's all you have...run what ya brung I guess!

Ir's all about placement. But I would go with a larger caliber to ensure the kill.

Hey duck, get at me with a p.m, we're in the same area. Chicken, I just talked to a buddy that coon hunts in his property on the banks of the colorado river. He was out on a hunt last night and ran up on a group of pigs. He whacked a 34 lb pig with his Marlin Model 60 22lr.I asked ol Tiny where did he hit him, and he said "right behind the ear at about 16 yards". I don't know dude, unless I have done it, I'd pack a larger caliber.

I have shot many of hogs with a .17 and I love watching them drop. It will do the job. Old timers still use 22's to drop a cow before they butcher it and it drops them like a sack of potatos.

You Texas guys blow my mind. Where I live, we do not have a large number of hogs. Some times I wish we had more. I know the problems with them. I think you guys are lucky to have the opertunity to hunt all year. We are not that lucky. You ever need some hogs killed you just let me know.
gun control means hitting what you are aiming at!

hey elite-taxidermy, Friday night, both of my feeders were cleaned out by about 100 hogs of all sizes within 10 minutes of when they went off, so much for the deer that didnt get any corn. my buddies each got 2 boars with a bow and I could have shot and killed a few too. we are overrun with hogs here and they will probably be in Arkansas soon, believe me, you dont want them. you know the old saying of "be careful what you wish for" last year we trapped and sold over 600, we are gonna have to start trapping again soon, even though I dont think there is any money in them anymore. they really are a pain down here in south central Texas.

Hey Squirt, you probably seen me there, I have been chairman of the beer garden at the Watermelon Thump for years, but this was my last year, getting too old to do this. my lease is in southern Gonzales county and we are very much overrun with hogs. this may sound good to some people, but believe me it is not good news for us.
