Hey everyone, as someone who has never hunted but wants to get started, I was wondering how you choose camo? With so many patterns to choose from, is there one pattern that can be used in most circumstances? I'd really rather not buy seven sets of camouflage just to get started hunting. I guess my question is: which pattern should be my first camouflage purchase?

Sounds good. That's the kind of answer I was hoping for, haha. Now if I could just find someone to hunt with... I might actually get in to this sport.

Try this link to Mossy Oak, it gives you a general break down for each pattern and their uses.... MOSSY OAK PATTERNSI will often mix patterns, depending upon where and what I'm hunting. Use the BRUSH PATTERN shirt or top, and BREAK UP or OBSESSION on the bottom. Everyone has their favorites....sorta like Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. Match your patterns to your hunt!

Style points are counted off for non-matching camo at the hunting lease.

In my opinion I don't think it matters much. I have a sent lock leafy suit. I don't know if the leafy suite helps but when the wind is blowing the little leaves move and I think it makes you look more like a tree branch. But it wont matter much if you are not still. I bow hunt so if you are asking about being close don't move. If your in a rifle blind you don't need camo the only way you will get busted is if the deer comes in the blind with you. If that happens you have other tings to worry about.

I really like the Mossy Oak patterns but have settled for a home-made top. Light reflection is something else to look at IMO.

I dont wear camo. I think its hilarious that people wear camo deer hunting in some states and wear those bright orange vests over their camo. Doesnt make sense.
Where I hunt when the feeder goes off my pen is like a petting zoo of deer and axis. they could care less...

I wear brown wrangler jeans and a camo shirt of whatever pattern I like. I generally go for the more open patterns since some just tend to 'blob' together and look black from a distance.
On the subject of orange-the general theory is that deer don't recognize that color, so the camouflage effect is not lost. Remember, camo is meant to break up your outline, so the highly detailed patterns may LOOK cool to us, but not be all that effective in the field.
The camo that I like is Natgear, King's Desert Shadow, and Cabela's outfitter camo. There are others that are good, but the first two are pretty open and seem to work better in the areas I hunt most. Of course, that's all based on what I look like from a distance to my buddy and vice-versa...you can't ask the deer!!
On the flipside, I've hunted many a day in blue jeans and never seemed to be at a disadvantage. I think motion is the key in most situations. If you're dressed in regular street clothes, you better be still! Camo seems to give a small amount of 'wiggle room'-PUN INTENDED.

WHEN IT COMES TO CAMMO I PLAY "THE PRICE IS RIGHT" WHAT EVER IS CHEAPEST IS THE KIND I WEAR.
NOT TOO MANY YEARS AGO THE WASN'T ANY CAMMO AND PEOPLE STILL HUNTED AND STILL KILLED GAME. I FIGURE ANY PATTERN WILL DO JUST FINE.

There are animals that require camo to hunt and then there are those that don't. Camo for a bow hunter thats close and required to draw is a must.....gun at a distance its less critical. Like stated above, deer don't see color and camo just breaks up the overall pattern to hide slight movement. I think the camo people have the best marketing teams in the game......Camo is alot like fishing lures.....some are built to cach fish and some to cach the fiserman!!!!!!!

I just wear a camo shirt and blue jeans. I hunt by gun and not bow so I really do not require camo at all cause of the distance. I wear whatever is on sale because I know I am going to get it ripped torn and destroyed going through brush. I think that simply breaking up your outline is all it takes.
