Ive read countless other threads about this but would like some additional advice/opinions. I have a Winchester 1300 12 ga. 28" with a screw-in mod. choke. The problem is that for some reason, the threads on the barrel for the choke are gunked up and the modified choke will NOT come out. I have the option of turkey hunting with a modified 12 gauge, or buying a new 12 gauge. I went out and patterned my gun at 25 yards with light 6 shot 2 3/4 inch. Got 15 - 18 in the vitals on a makeshift turkey target. (I made it about life-size). I've never turkey hunted before and would like to start. Do I need to get this new gun so i can use a better choke? Or should I stick with mod. and use the best patterning shot? I figure at best with a mod choke, i can get 30 yard kills (based on what ive read, getting at least 10 in the vitals). Where do you turkey hunters get most of yalls kills at?

You can kill them with the mod at mid to close range. Have you tried taking your gun to a gunsmith?

Have you tried a penetrating oil to remove the choke? I had the same thing happen and let the barrel sit in Kroil, covering the entire choke, for a week.
Surprisingly it came out.

No and no, I have not done either. Im content with shooting a mod at everything else enough to where I don't want to go out of my way to find a trustworthy gunsmith. What exactly is mid to close range? And what penetrating oil would you recommend?

I am cheap, I would try a automatic transmission fluid first for the penetrating oil. I use it my shop all of the time, if that doesn't work I sometimes add some mineral spirits and let it set in that. The mineral spirits, which is paint thinner with the ATF will dissolve anything. If you doubt that Google "red's gun cleaning formula".

Okay thank you. I'll take care of it. In the mean time, I still might buy the new gun. Cause... you know... A man can never have enough guns.

Also, I would not use a Mod choke on turkey at 30 yards, your talking more like 20 max, and frankly, thre's too muck temptation when they haing up at 40 and you just want to take a shot. All you'll do is cripple the bird unless you get the golden BB in the the neck head area. IMHO

Surprisingly it came out. X2 on what LarryCopper said Fill a half pint glass jar with enough kroil so the choke can be completely submerged in it for a week; then wrap it in a towel and lock it in a padded vise. Insert a choke wrench and GENTLY tap tap tap on it with a hammer and it should come loose. To prevent it from happening again, clean out the threads really well with solvent and small brush and always wipe your chokes down with a light coat of high temp grease before installing them.

Ehh, I'll keep the modified in for a clay and dove gun. Went and got the SX3 yesterday! Super slick gun and I love it so far!
