LOL. Sure you can trap them. Sure they work 24x7
But pretty much 1 hog at a time = 1 hog per trap.
If I had 100 hogs on the property, 100 .308 rounds is a lot cheaper and faster than 100 hog traps.
And all you need is one sow that won't go into a trap and you are right back where you started in a few years.

If you build it big enough, they will come. Not uncommon to trap "tens of hogs" at a time. Excellent solution for urban areas.
.308 rounds would be my preference, but not suitable for all areas.

I wish they had shown the trap setup that Animal Services, Inc. is using, that might have made this news report informative.

A friend of mine caught 38 in one trap a couple years ago, had to go get a bigger trailer. You can get rid of them for a while but i don't think its going to be as easy as this guy thinks to eradicate them due to the fact they are getting educated to traps.

Landowner pays him to trap. He sells the hog for probably .40 a lb. He makes $, and the landowner gets rid of a few hogs. I don't care what anyone says or who they are you will never get rid of ALL OF THEM. Pretty smart move on his part by calling the news channel, great to promote his services.

The reporter stated he claims a 100% success rate. That sounds pretty far fetched to me...

Hey, I have a 100% success rate as well. Every hog I have killed is dead. In fact, I have eradicated all of the hogs from my property SEVERAL TIMES! Trapping is good, no doubt. However, last I checked, Grayson still has a helluva problem with hogs.

people have been trapping for decades. We still have the hogs. I'm not sure how trapping magically makes them all go away now

I think it all helps, you trap the dumb ones and shoot the remaining hogs that won't go into trap. Snares on exit trails, work as well. I have had no hogs for over 1 1/2 years in a 1000 acre watermelon field. By shooting them where they were setting up house in a 800 acre brush area across road from field. Now the source of the hogs is a federal refuge 8 miles away. When you don't have them you miss them No hogs since corn was harvested back near end of Jan. In my area a lot of open fields, so areas of brush where they can setup house is limited. When tracks are spotted going in to small brush patches, that area is targeted, especially at night with NV & thermal, usually they are all shot or enough of the big ones to not see them again. I use to be able to get hogs all the time 2 yrs ago. Now it's only when the corn is planted, and only a sounder maybe 1 every month or two till I spot them . Once they are shot then it's a waiting game to see if any are going to come in. Farmer is happy. I don't expect any til late Oct\Nov when corn is planted again. Last yr only 21 total killed, yr before over 100 not counting the ones that ran off and died. This is over miles and miles of farm land not a small area surrounded by brush. If surrounded by brush you can't eliminate the source of the problem.

I don't think the hog population is in any danger of extinction. Even with the best traps out there. Too much food for them in the wild. The hogs do get smarter and some won't go into traps. There are a lot more hunters per acre in the northern states, so the population will gain slowly up here. The northern winters affect their breeding and survival rates.
My grandfather told me that he did not see a deer in Iowa until 1951. He was an avid trapper with miles of line, plus he hunted and fished for a living. It took the deer about 50 years to reach a nuisance level even with controlled hunting. Hogs breed at 7 to 10 times the rate of deer. Anyone who thinks that feral hogs won't become a nuisance needs to think twice.

Say what you will about traps. 3 guys 4 round traps 61 hogs one night while we sat around a campfire listening to George Jones and drinking beer is a good night. I've seen 1 hog in the last 11 months on my place. One of my neighbors is over run because he likes to hunt them. If I need hog meat I just call him and go to his place. I love it.

We trapped hard as soon as deer season was over. Lost track as to how many we got. Probably 30 or more until it just shut off. Down to one or two a week now. Right now, they are terrorizing my neighbor but with his grain fields gone and water becoming scarce, they will be back.

Getting all the meat you want for a little labor is a huge plus. I would be loving it too. My family of nine has a food intake of about $15K a year. Welcome, Bushfamilynine. I want to see some pics of those giant Iowa WT this year, OK? Thanks for the welcome. The big bucks are a long ways away from me. I am out in the open plains. Makes good forage for a couple does, but not enough cover to keep bucks hidden.

Let's see if I get this right. Trapping is a new idea? Bull nookie.
The story is appealing to the news people because it tries to show a kinder gentler way to remove hogs without the evil WEAPONS.
Just another anti-gun story wallowing with the pigs.

Dogs are the best! But most of use in my area in east Texas have to much fun chasing them through the woods to want to kill them all. You can't beat the sound of walking up to a bay echoing through the Piney Woods.

They are talking about Grayson County.
Just to talk about Hagerman - They have at least 2-3 full time trappers that are in there trapping hogs, (as far as I know) They ran the helicopter this past winter, there is at least 2-3 Game Wardens that shoot every pig they see on site in the refuge and the Deer hunters can kill pigs.
And guess what...
There is still PLENTY of pigs running around in Hagerman which is Grayson County.
One of my hunters that was on one of my wheatfields that borders the refuge had over 100 hogs come out of the refuge and into my field.
There is NO Shortage of Pigs and not any sign of them decreasing in population soon.
THE ONLY WAY THE POPULATION WILL DECREASE IS TO HAVE A DISEASE HIT THEM WHEN THEY HIT CARRYING CAPACITY. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY.
