Jase- I use just a regular staple gun, but I make sure to shoot a few staples into the board first to see how far they are going to penetrate the wood. If they go in to far it will be darn near impossible to get them back out without tearing the skin.

I have a friend that works with snake skins as a part time job for all sorts of items - belts, gun slings, wallets, etc....I recently brought him a 6.5 ft rattler I shot in Dimmit County, for him to work with. I had used salt for the initial curing, and turns out, that is not what you want to do. It shrinks the skin. He said if you don't have any glycerin/rubbing alcohol mix (the preferred curing method), you can freeze the skin and apply it later. He said if you don't have a freezer out in the field, salt will work in a pinch, but it can shrink the skin and it could damage it permanently.
