I just weighed out a box of Speer 7mm 145Gr bullets. Bullet weights ranged from 144.8 Gr - 145.8 Gr.
For best accuracy, would you break this group into smaller batches? For example 1/2Gr increments. Batch one 144.8 - 145.3 Batch two 145.4 - 145.8
If not, at what weight spread would you break into smaller batches?
Thanks firstshot

Not sure what I would do, but you have a typo there that makes your numbers confusing as can be. *** 145.4-145.8***

i have tried making match grade ammo, did not make to much of a difference for all the trouble. when i did it i weighed each projectile and sorted them to there respective tenth grain piles then after all was done sorted them to three different groups.

My experience has been that Speer and Hornady bullets have much more uniform weights than the bulk Remington bullets. Nevertheless, the bulk Remington bullets that have twice the variance ( in my admittedly limited test sample ) of the others, still shot very nicely in my hunting rifles, and killed game with great satisfaction.
My takeaway was this: if you're not shooting in competition, then it's not worth the effort to sort by weight.

mikey1313 & syncerus... I'm beginning to think the same.. i.e not worth the trouble. I'm weighing out some 140 Gr Sierra Pro-Hunters now just to see what kind of max spread I get.

The 7mm 140gr Sierra ProHunters came in with a .4Gr max spread (+-.2Gr), and 90% of them had a max spread of .2Gr (+- .1Gr).
Here are the details: Weight--Count 139.7-- 07 139.8-- 21 139.9-- 35 140.0-- 35 140.1-- 02 ------- 100
If these will shoot in my gun, my days of weighing bullets are over.

I havn't weighed a bullet in a year. But when I used to weigh them, they weren't that far out of spec. Maybe .2 gr up and down from what it was supposed to be. Most of them target bullets though.

Thanks firstshot I'm a little groggy and not feeling to well, but are you getting full grain difference in those bullets in that range? Maybe I should start weighing again..... What Speer bullets are those? Lead tipped Grand Slam or something?

If you are shooting a handgun out past 100 yards, your worries might have some basis. At less then 50 yards, it just doesn't matter. I tried sorting lead bullets out decades ago. Guess what? The mixed bullets shot better than the exactly weighed bullets. Even the bullets at both weight extremes shot great groups out to 25 yards. This ain't long-range rifle shooting.

Sorry... should have mentioned that these are the 7mm 145 Gr spire point (flat base) HotCor's And.... these are being shot in a Rm 700 7mm-08.

It won't matter. If I weigh anything, it will be the brass case. I've weighed bullets and sorted out all kinds of stuff. The main thing that will effect the accuracy will be the case size/weight. And you won't see this show up until 800+ yards. I would worry more about finding a good load, and weighing your powder charge accurately from case to case. This will effect the accuracy more than a .1 or .2 bullet weight.

Agree with Chad, don't expect to see any real changes until you are really trying to reach out with them. I do know what you are saying though. Horandy is the most consistent from what I have seen, but a close tossup with Nosler.

My Speer 150 gr grand slams are all within .1 gr. I was shocked that such a low priced bullet would be so close
