Greetings all!
I picked up an Ithaca/SKB 200e in 12 ga. at an auction. I got a great price on it as it had a custom spray-painted camo finish. This I could not abide so I decided to return it to its original condition. Citristrip took off all of the paint to reveal perfect bluing on the barrels and a nice walnut stock and forearm. Some of the clear coat was already missing from the stock so I want to strip it to bare wood and give it an oiled finish. The problem I am running into is the remaining clear coat. The citristrip just makes it slightly tacky as does acetone, but neither are able to remove it from the wood. I want to avoid sanding it off as the checkering is in great condition. Does anyone have any experience with this finish ( I don’t even know what it is) and how to remove it without damaging the wood? I really appreciate any assistance.
Thank you,

Billy

Tried lacquer thinner ? Or maybe aircraft grade stripper.

Citristrip will work.(use gloves) Slop it on heavy and let it sit for about 2 hours. Slop some more on and let that sit for 20 minutes. Now use a lexan scraper like you use on your windshield when it has ice. Gently scrape and you should see a yellow gummy residue coming off. Repeat this process and scrape. Use small wire brushes on the checkering. When you don't see anu more finish coming off give it a good bath in warm soapy water. If you see shiny spots use a bit more stripper on them. Or gently start sanding with about 220 grit paper.I keep going until I get to 440 and it is slick as a tub of butter.
If you don't want to fool with it just send all of it to me and I will properly care for it.
When you get ready to refinish ... let me know
