How hard/cost effective is it to convert a .270 to .30-06? Is it worth doing or should I just trade for a .30-06?

Change of barrel. You could trade. Why would you though?

WHY???????

Unless you are planning on hunting Brown Bears, the 270 is gonna kill anything you will probaby ever run into.

Why do you feel that the 270 is not good enough???????

Sorry, have to disagree with that statement.

Having both a 30-06 and a 270 is like marrying sisters.

The only real advantage a 30-06 has over a 270 is heavier bullets.

I personally saw a 5x5 bull elk killed with one shot from a 270 using a 150 grain bullet, at 500+ yards, it broke both shoulders and went thru the lungs, the bull went about 20 yards before folding up.

If anyone can show me where that is not good enough, I am more than interested.

I agree that there aint much difference between the two! And I agree that both are plenty capable of taking down 99.99% of what you are likely to encounter in the U.S.!

I am just saying that life is too short to have to choose between the two! I say he should keep the 270, and go buy him an '06 also!

You can never have too many toys!!

I say convert the 270 to a 280AI. Just my two cents.

The reason I am saying what I am, is that the ballistics of the two, are so close, that a person will, end up using one to the exclusion of the other.

I have known a couple of folks that tried that very thing, and they ended up getting rid of one of the rifles.

If a person wants to spend money on another gun, drop down to the 25-06, 7mmx57, 257 Roberts/257 Weatherby Mag, or jump up to the 300 Win Mag/300 Weatherby Mag, or something larger.

In my opinion, for the most part or application, choosing between the 270 and 30-06 is like choosing between your right hand and your left hand.

Nothing you shoot with either is going to know the difference or care.

I already have a .30-06. I've heard all the arguments about the .270 and I like it. I've taken whitetails and mulies and they do the job. Bullet trajectory between teh two, when using the same bullet weight is roughly the same. You are just stuck with two bullet weights in the .270 for all practical purposes. And the way the world is going, I think I want all my guns to digest .30 cal. 300 win mag is a good point though. Thanks for the input guys. Love the forum.

If both of them are hot, then I'm all for it!

Yes, you can have your 270 converted to a 30-06. However, by the time to pay to have it done, your going to spend so much that you could have picked out a really great used 30-06 and still kept the 270 to boot. (I agree that the two calibers are so close that keeping both will be of limited benefit.) I guess if I thought I absolutely needed to be able to shoot heavier bullets than are available for my 270, I'd jump all the way up to one of the 300 Mags or even a 338. That way, I'd still have an antelope gun, and I'd be ready for my once in a lifetime trip to Alaska.

The bullet flight path - aka "drop" - is virutally the same with a pairing of a 270 & a 300WMg bullets in the following weights: 130gr & 165 gr, 140gr & 180gr, 150gr & 200gr...out to about 500 yards or farther...makinbg it super easy to use the same hold over points at longer distances with either caliber. Now if you get used to shooting a 270 130gr'er and switch to a 300WMg 200gr'er of course there will be a little difference in the drop estimations out past 3-400 yards...but very surpringly the heavier bullets do retain slightly better/flatter drop figures the farther you get past 300 yards, and the 200gr bullet is world respected out of a 300 WMg for being a real hammer on larger game critters at long ranges, and is/has been used for may years to win the 1000 yard bench rest matches. Some newer configurations are just beginning to dominate the old 300WMg at 1000 yards.

I've been shooting this pairing for lots of years, since the early 70's for that very reason, cause I grew up shooting longer ranges by "guesstimation" way back before cheap affordable field worthy range finders were ever thought of, and I needed NOT to have to learn a seperate holdover guesstimation for a different caliber....even to the point of owning several calibers from 223, 243, 25-06 (a non cataloged one of a kind rifle in a collectors item I never shot), 270, and a 300WMg all in the same brand and stock style of rifle to enhance my level of comfort and not have to fumble for the safety or the floor plate release or whatever...all the guns were exactly alike, but the basic pairing was the 270 and a 300WMg. Unfortunately I've never needed to use the 300's heavier bullets though, where I was using a 270, at least here in Texas...but I also have never had the opportunity to hunt 200-250+lb hogs or nilgi and other exotics like a 2000lb kudu or anything else that a stout 270 bullet could not handle with ease ... but I did win some serious bux off some deer camp folks shooting rocks a Loooong way across a canyon southwest of Sonara one year with the big Winnie.

Modern bullets that we now take for granted are so much better than when I started hunting in the late '60's...and the game bullet choices now in a 270 start with a Sierra 90gr HP 3600fps screamer, lots of 100gr'ers, a 110gr Sierra SP at about 3300 fps(and a Barnes TSX & others in the new 6.8 desigination that is just a new .277 diameter round for LEO's and the military and used off of an AR receiver setup), a 120gr'er (Barnes TSX), the ever popular multitude of 130gr'ers, the becoming more accepted 140gr'era s the best all around bullet choice? mebbe it is dunno, the various 150'ers that I have always liked best, a Nozler 160gr Partition thats been around for 30+ years for a slight edge in deeper penetration, and a Barnes 180gr'er "Original".

It really helps to be a handloader so you can utilize ALL the choices in a given caliber available to you. A 270 & 338WMg would also be a good pairing IMO

who said step done to a 257 weatherby? that is by far a flatter shooting and harder hitting round than a 270 in the same bullet gr.
