My biggest, and only, issue with the hi-cap mags in .223 comes when I'm shooting benchrest off sandbags. The long magazine protrudes too far down and contacts the bench. Shorter mags allow me to set up properly and acheive a good cheek weld without the bottom of the mag hitting the bench.

And if you shoot an AR chambered for 7.62x39, the hi-cap mags have feeding problems....even my C-Products magazines have issues if you load more than around a dozen rounds in them.

Thus, I tend to use 10-round mags mainly.

Because a 100 round drum just looks SILLY! I have a few ARs but only 1 in 5.56. I have 5,10,20,30,60,90,and 100 round mags, but when I go to the lease most of my rifles have a 10-20 round mags but rarely do they have more than 5-10 rounds in them. Generally I load them before hunting season and don't unload them until after the season, or have enought targets on the ground that I need to reload.

I bought 2 42-rounders Saturday at Academy in Lewisville for $19 bucks each because they were out of 30's. Guy pointed me to a cart full of newly arrived mags. I guess I could have made a few bucks if I'd bought the whole cart. Must have been 20 of them..

Got plenty of 30s, but I really like the shorter 5s, 10s or 20s for hunting & bench shooting. This recent panic & fleecing of the unprepared is kind of sad to witness.

It isn't the mag capacity that is the problem but the size and shape of the magazine. I have 100 round Beta-C mags that are much shorter than 20 round AR15 magazines and not much longer than my 9 round magazines that can with ban-era AR15s.

I also like the Beta-C mags in the stand that I use because I can set the AR15 on the rail without it toppling left or right, or one the ground.

In addition to the "Oh CRAP" moments with feral hogs, there's something nobody's mentioned yet. I've not seen it myself, but there are documented media reports of Jose Coyote, Juan Drug-Smuggler, or Jesus Cartel-Gunman coming across and introducing themselves to hunters in the border area in some of the most unpleasant fashions. Sometimes complete with more than a few of their best friends.

In that scenario, do you want your hunting weapon (which now has to keep you alive) to have 5 rounds? Or 30?

I haven't heard of any border issues with hunters vs. cartel minions. Do you hunt down there?

No matter.....I'm not gonna get into a fire-fight with anyone, anywhere. I'll hunt somewhere else.

Yeah, but as I've said elsewhere not as much as I would like in the last couple of years. I've been hearing things from down there that I would rather not confirm in person though.

I don't want to get into a firefight down there either, but at the same time, large magazines do seem to be a prudent precaution from what I'm hearing down there - if only to keep the banditos' heads down while you run the hell away.

I agree completley

I have a few 30 round mags, but rarely use them
I like 20s for bench shooting and hunting

The reason I want to keep 30 round mags is the same reason a dog licks his own ba*ls... because he can

I'll use the smaller capacity mags for hunting. A big reason for that is weight. A loaded 30 round mag gets heavy after a bit.

I own the larger capacity mags for the reasons others have listed here...

Like dogcatcher I to served in Vietnam. By the way, Welcome home Dog. I carried an M-16 as did all the guys that served with me. We had 20 rounds mags and the came in handy in a fire fight. I don't own any type of assult rifle or high compacity mags. Never felt a need for it here. I do remember taking my CHL class and a guy asking why I thought I needed a CHL. My response was "Its my right to have one if I wish". The same with owning any type of rifle, its our right. No explaination needed.

Honestly, I like the 20 round mags. Easier on the bench, lighter in the field.

Besides, I can't ever recall shooting one dry during a hunt.

I have 30 round mags because I CAN have them.
