I shoot a weatherby vanguard .270 with a 130 grain bullet. I have a 10x bushmaster scope with mil dot reticle. I have missed out on a couple nice bucks because I am not comfortable shooting over 100 yards since my range only has 100 yard max. I need help learning my mil dot reticle and knowing which one to put on target at longer distances. Any suggestions guys?

Forgot to mention a am zeroed in at 100 yards so wondering what mil dot for 200 yards and on.

1" high is dead nutz at 200 yards. I shoot same set up but has some work done and im comfortable out to 300 or so with that gun.

+1 I shoot a Hornady .270 bullet but 1-1.2" high at 100 yards should put you close to dead on at 200 yards.

There are a bunch of ballistic tables available online that will tell you the path of your bullet. Until you know how it is flying at given distances, your scope won't be nearly as helpful.

Some factory loads even have it printed on the back of the box. Just a thought.

Most of the major mfg for ammo will have ballistic charts on their websites for each caliber and grain of bullet that they sell. You can go to their website and print off the corresponding charts.

IF your sited in at 100yds with a 130gr bullet and he's at 200yds....simply put the cross hairs where you want the bullet to go.

it drops 1.5" and the bullet is nearly 1/3" wide- no need for mildot or windage.

X3. At 300 yards a high center mass aim will put it in the pump station with that round.

Handloads.com ballistic calculator is what I use. U need the bullet weight , ballistic coefficient and velocity. But if all your shooting is 200 yards the mill dot and ballistics don't really matter as said before.. I had my .270 and 140 grain sst set about 2.5" high at 100 and its about the same at 200 dead on at 300 and 12" low at 400.

You can look at all the charts you want, but every bullet shoots different in every rifle. Id say you need to find somewher to shoot that far and find out.

Get a mil dot master to help with your ranging as well.

You're making too big a deal out of this. With your 270 and the 130 grain bullet, sight it in at 200 yards and then you'll be 7 inches down at 300, 20 inches down at 400, and 40 inches down at 500. That'll vary somewhat with the bullet you shoot, but generally that's pretty close. Just remember 7, 20, 40. Pretty simple. Obviously, the 40 inches is a big holdover, but I don't shoot at 500 yards anyway.

Build a range at your lease where you take a few practice rounds at 200-300 yards before you shoot at deer at that range. You really should know where your rifle's point of impact is at those ranges. I don't recommend practicing it on live animals.

The other guys all pretty well nailed it...One premier rule of thumb is "Keep it on Hair"...Don't hold over...it's alright to raise your poi if shooting a long shot but you are apparently not
shooting head or neck shots..and the chest area is about 15 to 18
inches most cases..cross hair on top of back w/take care of 300 plus yds..Don

First thing make sure your scope and rings are tight. Next double check your zero. Third verify the distance you shot at the deer via a rangefinder. The next thing is to learn the mil dot system. Then get a ballistics calculator for an accurate flight path. Most ammo mfg will have one. I also use isnipe and it will use local weather conditions and assist for elevation, humidity and wind.

I may be wrong on this, so someone correct me if I am.

But when I purchased the leverevolution ammo and wanted to buy a scope with the Mil Dot Reticle, doesn't the POI for each dot change with Zoom? The distance between each dot is different depending upon whether your are at 4x or 10x power.

That's why I decided against using that. Ended up sighting in 2 1/2" high at 100 and I'm 2 1/2" low at 200. 0-200 just aim where I want the bullet to hit and I'll be within 2 inches.

If you're at 4x that bottom dot may be good for 500 yards. But when you switch to 10x, the bottom dot may be good for 300 yards. This is just purely a guess and an example. Not meant to be anywhere near accurate.

Just think it's way easier to use crosshairs only and shoot enough to know your POI at all ranges in which you will be shooting. Raise your POI at 100 yards to 1-2" high and I bet you will be good to go out to 300 yards without worrying about distance and adjusting elevation for distance.
