In the poor old days, we hunted out of real tree stands. "Real" meaning 2X4 steps nailed to the trunk of the tree and then a 2X10 to sit on.
Thinking of putting up a few in strategic spots. Kind of neat places to sneak into while out still hunting. Fun way to hunt - except in bad weather!
Anyone else hunt this way?

I have found some on my property in Kansas, I wonder how old they are? 20, 50 years? I have also come accross some in Illinois.

Growing up in the Hill Country, I never hunted out of anything else until I was probably 26. I'm 32 now. I still love tucking up inside a big oak tree.

I've hunter from lots of 'em. Built a few too. Last one I built was in about '90 or '91. Property owner got mad about it.

I remember doing that. I don't even know if there were store bought tree stands back then. I'm afraid I'd fall out and break a hip now.

I got my first deer, a buck, from a tree I just climbed up in and parked it on a branch.
Will be hard to do where I'm at now. Lots of mesquite and thick underbrush under the oaks we have.

I have one in a hackberry tree in West Texas that I still hunt. My dad killed a nice management 8 out of it this year. Just has a 2x10 to sit on. Also have a tree that we just sit in the fork of a tree. Sure aren't as comfortable as a "real" stand.

Anyone else hunt this way? I did until had one break and I fell 15' to the ground. As cheap as hang ons are might as well be get a couple...might save you family a lot of grief in the long run. Sportmens guide, academy, and cabelas has clearances at the end of the year..I bought 5 two years ago for 30$ a peice

I haven't hunted out of one in years, but that was the first type of "stand" I even used.
Now, I've found a few on my place in recent years. They weren't supposed to be there....
Did get a nice ladder from one of them.

"In the poor old days.." In the old days. I could climb up into a tree stand. :-)
We have a few on the place from years ago but I have instructed my hunters not to attempt to use them. Not real safe anymore.

My favorite stands were always boards in trees. We've replaced two with tripods and one with a metal box made out of old barn tin. Still miss sitting in trees.

I get nostalgic about stuff sometimes, but we really are a lot smarter about some stuff now. These were the days when an acceptable gift to give a young boy was a hatchet. The dad would then say, "Now don't chop anything!" Right.
I wonder how many folks fell out of those things. I know my a$$ sure would fall asleep on that hard wood seat. When it falls asleep during the day, it stays up all night when I try to go to bed.

Actually, tree stands are my preference. To build one right, comfortable and safe takes some time but I love them to death. All that said, the lease I am on now has very few trees that could support a stand. But I recently found a huge cedar that will have a stand in it next year.

What do you mean "the poor old days" ?
Think I'm still in 'em!
Seriously, I still have one on my property. Don't think my fat butt would work too well in it, but the son in law has used it this year.

Its been about 15 years since I last got my Bottom on a 2X6 up in a tree. Had a lot of fond memories of close encounters with wildlife in them trees!

Branches & boards don't break on a portable tri-pod or a leaner. They don't accidentally slide down the trunk either!

As I recall, those nailed in steps don't hold very good. I would at least get some screw in steps if I was you.
