I've got one too many 270's laying around. I was thinking about having one rebarreled to a 26" 25-06. What other options are available based on the 270 action without requiring any rechambering, etc?

A .270 can be used to build any long action caliber with a standard size bolt face ( .25-06, .30-06, .280, 7x57, .......), but any caliber change will require a rechambering by changing the barrel.

308 works for me..I've had both, but the 30 is great because of
choices in projectiles, cart., ect..and it's pleasant to fire, and naturally accurate..DD

I think 25-06 is one of those "perfect deer calibres"

.25-06 is on my to-build list in the near future. .35 Whelen would be really cool too.....

Already have a 257 Wby. Plus, those would require rechambering.

Anybody have any info on 6mm-06? I'm having a hardtime finding ballistics on this one. But based on what I've read - it appears to be a necked-down 270. It should be a screamer.

6mm-06 will be a ballistic twin to the 6mm-284.

My pick would be a 280-280AI or a 6.5-284.

If you change barrels w
you will rechamber as the chamber is reamed into the barrel absolutly no way around that. If you were meaning not modifying the bolt face or mag well that is different the re chambering. Then my anwer is 6.5 06

The 284 case is too short - would have feed issues. The catch to this little project is to not touch the action.

284 will work with follower mods nothing serious.

Modify the follower, that's what I did when I rebarreled my Rem. 700 from 270 Win. to .308 Win. years ago. No feed issues with every different type of bullet I've ever loaded for it. Used the long action for it so I could seat bullets farther out and use the longer, higher weight bullets.

Personally, I'd probably go with a .25-'06 for no other reason than I don't currently own one.

What mfg. rifle is it you are wanting to rebarrel?

It's just an old Win M70.
It was my 1st deer rifle, given to me by my father in 1984, and now I'm getting ready to hand down to my daughter. I just wanted to do something a little different and try to reduce the recoil a bit for her.

In that case i would look at a 7x57 hqve to compare dimensions on case heads but i think it would work on that bolt face a good cartridge for a young lady

I don't know much about the 7x57, I'll have to take a look at that one.

...and I don't reload, but I can help keep Chad in business. grin

I read an article about the 6.5 - 284 Norma and it sounds kinda impressive, shoots flatter than the .270 but has almost the same energy and less recoil. I might try to find one or maybe buy a .260 rem. I don't need either but I don't have one so I guess I really do need one! I have 3 .270's, that should be enough in that caliber. Right???

Cliff notes= ballistic twin to the 7mm-08 but in a long action. Get some 120-140 bullets loaded and she'll be golden.

This exactly. Good round.

Of course nowadays there are the managed recoil rounds. Since you're going to give it to your daughter though, the 25-06 would most likely be the best caliber, in my opinion.

You can only have too much ammo if you are on fire or swimming....

In that case look at the 257 Roberts, mild recoil and very effective on deer. The 7X57 like others have said is another good one, they both share the same case just use different bullet diameters. Same case head as the 270 so no bolt modifications needed. Swap the barrel and be good to go.

Ummm... How old? You mean it was new in '84, not some valuable old model 70 from the sixties or earlier, right?

A 6.5-06 would be at the top of my list. I will build one some day. Just neck down 270 Win brass to 6.5mm, and screw on a 6.5mm barrel. Easy.
