I have been feeding my nine year old lab Sportsmans Pride dog food for about five years. I live in Denton and have been getting it in east texas when I go see my parents. It is becoming a real hassle to get the food up here so I am thinking about changing foods. What do y'all feed your dogs?

Science Diet (for older dogs formula).
My 12yo GSP loves the stuff. Has kept him 'puppy like' in energy.

Pro Plan Performance (I think they call it "All Life Stages" now(winter)) and Pro Plan Large Breed (summer).

I use to feed pro plan, then switched to Eukanuba and really liked the results, for my dog it seemed to work out better.

now that I dont have a dog i did not want the left over food to go to waste so I ate the Eukanuba and it was not bad at all

Attention rickym, this is not a troll post, just a good hearted fun type of post

What matters to me the most is the nutritional info. For instance, in the winter, when we hunt, I like to use a food that is higher in protein and fat. We all burn more fat in cold weather. In warm weather, the dog needs more protein and less fat. If you read the labels and compare info you can make your decision accordingly. The brand, to me, is not a priority.

I was in the same boat as far as availability of the food I was feeding and decided on a switch. I went to the Canidae All Life Stages for the off season and have really liked the results as he seems to have more energy and his stools seem to be better (not as much waste). I will probably supplement a higher protein and fat content food for the hunting season though. Probably a Innova Red Meat food or something along those lines.

The last labrador puppy I raised was in 1992. I lost her in 2007.
I now have a new lab at 9 months old. Great dog.
One item: Science Diet a few years ago for a 40 pound bag was around $32. ($29 on "sale")
NOW, Science Diet, large breed puppy, at Petco, Firewheel Mall, Garland Texas is:

$50 for a 40 lbs bag.
What the hell happened?
To give Petco credit, the small breed Science Diet (smaller pieces) is $39, but is this what you're seeing? That's incredibly expensive considering a Lab eats 1 40lbs bag of food per month.

Is there a Science Diet equivalent that I should look into? (Eukanuba is out, as my last lab yakked for 4 days when I gently tried to make the switch, by slowly introducing it into her Science Diet). Was a $30 experiment that just didnt' work.

The Canidae runs $41.00 a bag and it just jumped there from $36.99. Extreme Dog Fuel at BPS was $23.99 and is now $27.99 so they all seem to be jumping in price.

I feed Science Diet for large breek dogs, feeding three labs. I buy it at Petsmart. I can usually find a couple. For instance, I bought a 40 pound back yesterday, using an $8.00 coupon, and paid $23.00 final price.

Scattergun, I wanted to try Black Gold but the availability was the worst part. Even spoke with a sales guy out of Oklahoma but it was not workable at the time. Perhaps their distribution lines are more established now. I know my BIL fed it and had excellent results on his DDs, FWIW.

I feed a holistic diet. I've used Innova EVO Red Meat and gotten superb results with it. My dog had improvements in lean muscle mass, and overall body composition, endurance, skin and coat. It is leaps and bounds beyond most commercial dog foods.

I have recently switched to Pinnacle Peak Protein and am having the same kinds of results. Th only reason for the switch was that the Innova EVO is only available at one place in the entire northern Metroplex and Pinnacle is easier to find.

You can get some awesome information about dog food at www.dogfoodanalysis.com. I made the switch to a holistic diet after losing a dog to stomach cancer and observing that nearly all working dogs die from cancer of some kind. I brought this up with a research veterinarian I know and she said that most canine cancers have a dietary component in their causes. A lot of what dogs are being fed these days is absolute junk.
