Me and the boy got to go up to Mississippi hunting on a buddy's place again this year. I went two years years ago and came home empty handed but had a blast just hanging out and getting to hunt an area that I have never been to. Last year I got to take my boy hunting with me and we had a blast . I got a nice main frame 8 and the boy missed on a nice big doe ,but he got bit with the hunting bug . All he has been talking about is getting to go hunting and practicing so he didn't miss again. Well the trip was made on Friday ( he got to leave school early) so we could hunt Saturday morning. All we seen was a couple of does that morning and on the afternoon hunt we seen a was a nice 8 but he was out around 200-220 yards and decided it was a little far for him and three does . Sunday morning started out better we seen around 10 does and four young bucks but nothing mature. The afternoon hunt started slow and then we seen some movement in the woods and out stepped a mature 8 that was within his shootings range of around 100 yards. There is nothing like watching your 7 year old trying to get ready to shoot his first deer with the buck fever jitters. After getting his shakes settled he made a good shot and hit him just behind the shoulder just a little back . The buck arched up and made it 20yards and locked up so I told him to take his time and put one more right behind the shoulder and this time he hit it perfect and he dropped . I could not tell you who was happier him or me. Another part of this hunt that made it special was that he shot his first deer with his grandpas 243 that had passed a few years back. Not that it matters but the deer scored 120 and 200#. After he got his then it was my turn to get to hunt . After not seeing any mature deer and not many does for the next couple of days we went back to the same field Gus had shot his in. Late in the afternoon we saw a couple does come out on the far south east end and ate for a while then had a small yearling and a doe come out followed by a big 9 after watching him and he gave the broadside view I took the shot and he went down. He is a nice deer and proud to have got him but still not as proud as the one Gus shot . I don't think anything can top that .

Congrats on some nice Mississippi Bucks and especially on you son's buck. Still love hunting those Mississippi bucks. What part of the state were you hunting? Myself east central part.

Dang, was going to head to Mississippi this year for a hunt until my wife said "hell, no, that's my birthday and if you go I'm running off with your dog." Couldn't bear the thought of losing my dog.
