I have a Beretta Xtrema 2 that Im looking to sell or trade. It's valued between $1000-$1300. What hog gun do you think I should trade for/buy?

If your going to do just a little hunting at night w/ a light, pick your favorite long gun. If you want to put a hurting on em then definately go with an AR type weapon. I have three in 6.5 Grendel. Rarely do I use a long gun anymore... unless there is a day time opportunity to take one at long ranges.

I've been leaving my long gun in the safe in favor of an AR in 6.8x43 with a 20" 5R 1/12 barrel.
It's good out to 300 pretty easily and being an AR, has plenty of followup shots if/when needed.
And I don't worry about scratching the furniture or getting it wet/muddy either...

It's the time spent in God's creation with family and friends making memories that counts.

For that amount of cash you could get a Bushmaster .308 Optics Ready Carbine ( = AR10 ), but you could easily get by with something like a 7mm-08, .30-30, .270, .30-06, or a .308. You could also get a 6.8SPC or a .458 SOCOM. There are lots of choices. I tried an AR-15 and thought it just didn't hit hard enough. There are many others who disagree and think it's a great hog rifle.

Personally I'd recommend something that shoots at least a 120 grain bullet.

I use 180 grain .30 caliber bullets. With that much mass I don't need premium bullets, any soft point will do the job. I have not yet had a bullet fail to exit. The last time I was out I got two with one shot!

I have two unwritten rules:
1.
2.

many guns would work well, i'm liking my 6.8 with Barnes 95gr TTSX bullet or 120gr Hornady SST's...low recoil, works well, currently setup with a 7.62x40WT but can switch the PVS-14 around to other guns, but I would definitely go with an AR platform:
