I just bought a weatherby 30-378 accumark with 28" barrel. Anyone have some loads that worked good for them? I really want to use 180-200 grain bullets.

Thanks

With 165gr and 180gr Accubonds, H-1000 works well. With both weights start at 102 grains and work up till ya find what works best in your rifle. Weatherbys have very long throats in the barrel. Seat your bullets long. I use 3.745" as an overall length with the Accubonds.

50 BMG is very accurate in mine but velocities are slow. 50 BMG also give a HUGE buzzle blast. It's a little on the slow burning side for a 28" Accumark barrel. BMG works much better on custom 32" barrels. H870 is the best powder yielding best accuracy and velocity ever made for a 30/378 but is no longer availible.

We chronographed the loads with BMG and it ran about 3450fps. which was slower than the book, but with our altitude you can usually deduct 150fps which puts them where the book is...It does
have a muzzleblast from heck..considering the break ect..but the
loads were same hole and not much load work up..I think we started at 117 grains to a max of 122 grains..and it hit about
120 or so...and the powder was cheap compared to the rest..DD

Accurate enough for sure, for head shots but that has plenty umph for anything in this country with any ethical hunting shot.

Be careful. 110 in mine gave sticky bolt lift and proved to be too hot. Wby brass is very soft and primer pockets will open very quickly with hot loads.

Also, the Barnes bullets will copper fol the barrel very quickly at the 30-378 speeds. I have a customer I load for that shoots this caliber and shot some factory ammo with the Barnes 180 grain. It copper fouled the barrel bad and accuracy went away. He cleaned the rifle heavily and accuracy came back. I would not recommned the Barnes bullets at 30-378 speeds.

Also, he shot a black bear at 305 yards with a 208 A-max. The bear was almost facing him, with a slight angle. The bullet went in the front of it's chest, and the bullet was recovered under the skin at the back rear ham. That 208 A-max went almost 4 feet through the bear!

I am not a fan of shooting target rounds at animals. I have seen a 180 gr amax splinter when it hit a deer at 150 yards.

I have been shooting tsx at almost 3400 fps out of my 7stw without any problems. That being said I am not a target shooter so I have 3-4 shots a year in the field and 20 at the range. I make sure I clean the barrel after each session so maybe that helps.

DD, you mention barrel wear. I've had great luck using H870 in my 30-378. The powder is dirty, but it seems to do a great job placing tight groups and not wearing out a barrel. 720 rounds down the pipe and the bore scope shows really no throat erosion...
Only problem is this powder has long been discontinued...any thoughts on a replacement powder? After the last session at the bench I'm down to my final bottle.
