I'm sorry, I am new to these new style tactical weapons. I know the AR 15 is popular, but I'd like something a little bigger than a 223 round to take down hogs. Anybody know what to go with? Also anybody know good brands to go with?

An AR-10 in 308 would be a good one. Armalite makes a good one. A good bolt gun in 308 would also be good.

AR10 (308) has the most energy but weighs the most.

AR15 (6.8) has better energy than 5.56 but weighs the same.

I'm continuously impressed at how a little 5.56 can drop big pigs though.

The beauty of the AR is you can get one lower and multiple uppers (5.56, 6.8, 22, 7.62x39, 300blk, etc)

AK's are great but optics mounting is an after thought.

I shoot a 6.5 grendel and it is a very good cartridge for most game including hogs. I reload but Hornady has a factory round with the 123 grain Amax and Alexander Arms also has a selection.

AR15 platform is more versitile in my opinion. I would go with the 6.8 if you are wanting more thump than the 5.56. Of course there are other calibers out there for the AR15 with more knock down but the 6.8 is a good balance between knock down and still being able to reach out and touch something.

I agree with the other posts, if you want the same lower, go with 6.8spc. If you want a new platform, get a 308 Rifle. Can't go wrong with either. I can say first hand that 6.8 is effective of wild hogs.

Buy a 243wssm upper from Olympic arms or dtech (depending on your budget) you will not be disappointed! I have a oa 24" select match upper that will shoot clovers with 55 or 87 grain bullets

6.8 vote here. I had one and it will tear a pig up. Same as a 5.56, but with almost the power of the .308

6.8 SPC or .300 Blackout would be my choice. But you can by the 5.56 complete rifle and switch out the to a .300 Blackout Upper and use the same mags and Bolt Carrier Group.

Since here has yet to speak from the cheap person's perspective, then I will.

AR's come in a variety of calibers, nearly anything you can imagine. So I highly suggest you shoot a caliber that is readily available and relatively cheap to shoot. The 5.56/223 is the clear winner in this category, but I understand where you're coming if you just feel like you want a larger round. I would think the next in line is the 308/7.62x51. It's another military cartridge so you can find some super cheap rounds.

The cost of the rifle itself will vary greatly on a bunch of factors; mostly manufacturer and options. However, the price of the cartidge per caliber does not.
