Where I deer hunt, there are tons of coyotes. Late in the evening they always start yipping, yapping, and generally raising Cain. I got a couple of calls from dogcatcher but when I blow them, it just makes the coyotes bark. I thought they were laughing at me but someone told me it was a "Who are you?" response. They're always in thick brush and won't show their noses. Obviously I'm not giving them the right answer. What should I do when they bark at me? I've seen several skulking in the brush but they're just ghostly shapes that are always on the move.

Bark back at them. Just mimic what they are doing. After playing that game for a while(5 minutes +/-) blow a jackrabbit call and they'll come a runnin'.

More than likely if they are barking/howling at you they are educated. Someone on the properties around you have called them and made a mistake and didn't get them killed and now they now what's up when you blow your calls. I would just try howling at them. Use some vocals and just set and wait. You may be surprised how well that works. All a lot of folks know is to blow a distress call or turn on a Foxpro and it don't take long for them to catch on to the game. If you do use a distress call use something that more than likely they haven't heard. God only knows what that sound would be but try something different. Good luck

They know you are there. They probably will keep some distance. Howling a few times might get them to try and get a better look at what you are. If they are not tricked by you with whatever call you try they will not show.

There is a Youtube video on using the challenge call. They will come out of the woodwork if you do it correctly.

I have found that on educated yotes I use a sound that sounds nothing like anything in your area i.e. a snowshoe hare, fighting chipmunks sometimes gets the job done.EVERYBODY uses the adult cottontail or jackrabbit call around here.Throw them a curveball and see what happens. Like mentioned above sometime just barking back or howling will get it done

This time of year, I'd use a rabbit in distress call. Later in the year they get wise to it.

In Jan or so I'd use the barking call.

I didn't learn this by seeing it on TV, I learned it by doing it.

I'm with fur down sounds like your busted. I personally never try to call while the yotes are vocal. I ll let them calm down and then call my favorite call is woodpecker distress. I also start my calling low and increase my volume . It seems to me if you start out blowing as hard as you can and a dog is close it will bust me every time. I also have pigs come to the woodpecker call . That's my humble opinion . I'm not what you would call a pro!

Keep em huntin and they wont have time to get in trouble!! And remember RESPECT goes a long way!!

cellphone app and battery powered speakers are good to see if it works for you. if you want to try it before spending $$$$$ on a good setup. I have electronic call with remote and waggin tail and fan to disperse scent all in one setup works great. But i still like old school method smile
