Im wanting to make a light for the feeder to shoot hogs. I have bad night sight and want to be able to see them better. I was thinking about making a light consisting of a series of red LED bulbs around the bottom of the feeder at a angle. I could hook them up to the timer battery or add another battery somewhere on the feeder just for the light.

Do any of you guys have any ideas or suggestions for a better light design?

don't know what you are looking at to spend, but found this. Heard of several people using this similar setup.

I saw that as well. A little more than I wanted to spend. That is more than my feeder cost. I was thinking I could make my own without the solar panel and use LED for less drain on the battery in the feeder.

ahhh..another do-it-yourselfer! I HATE to buy something if I think I can make it myself! A buddy of mine made one using a trolling motor battery that he had and a solar panel to just trickle charge the battery during the day. He had the battery but bought the panel and the LED's. As far as I know, it's still working since last spring...we'll see after deer season since it's on his lease 6 hours away.

I think you should 'bite the bullet' and buy the panel so your light will always work when you want it to!

I found a light just like this one at http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/hunting.htm for $99. It looked to be almost identicle. I went there this weekend a blew most of my money but for $99 I dont think I could make a better setup. Of course I wanted red LED bulbs and this one has white but it will do.

$99. Dang, that's cheap. Let me know how that works and I may need to look into that for one of my feeders. Do they normally carry these lights all the time?

Have you thought about using a landscape light? I put one on the bottom of a varmint cage a couple of years ago and it's still working. It doesn't give you a ton of light but you can make out shapes like hogs below it. Once you get an ID on them, use a red spotlight to shine on them before you shoot.

Randywood that may be an idea.
As far as if this is a normal item they carry, i have no idea. This is a new store that just opened up here in San Antonio. But it has the name and Logo of the company here in Texas and I bet if we made contact with them we could do a group purchase.

I bought a light at Sportsman's Warehouse also. I think it is the same one yoiu guys are talking about. It is from Honey Creek Ranch, $99. Their web site is www.hcrelectronics.com The light works great, is says after it is fully charged it will work for 20 nights with no sunlight. I comes on and works all night long. Good Luck.

Symtex,
I have not tried these yet but I did order two of the red ones. The boys on the Texas Predator Posse use them and seem to like the way they work. Try this link. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=199696&pn=4

The price is right.

I was at Target with the wife yesterday and they had a small section of solar garden lights. One was a solar charge spot light with two LEDs. It couldn't be too terrible bright but for $20 it would be worth a try.

Why are you hung up on red? With hogs, I don't think it matters if your light is white, red, or purple.

This is funny. A few weeks back during bow season, I had some hogs coming into my feeder after dark. I went to Wal-Mart and bought a couple of the little lanterns that run on AA batteries. Before I got into my stand that afternoon to bow hunt, I hung the lanterns from the feeder and turned them on so that I wouldn't have to get out of my stand at dark to turn them on. Well, about 15 minutes after dark, both lanterns went poof, and no light. It seems you only have about 21/2 to 3 hours of light with these little lanterns.

we put six of the solar powered garded lights around the feeder fastend to t-posts. they worked great for 2-3 hours after dark and then went dead. we did kill hogs under them though. it cost around 60 dollars and worked great for the season. We did notice it tokk the hogs a week or two to get use to them though.
