Fellow Hoggers,

I currently have 99% Scent Killer spray that I use for scent elimination purposes as well as some Earth Scent Wafers. I am curious as to what some of you all use for scent elimination when hunting hogs? I've considered Ozonics, does anybody use this or go to that extent for hogs? I'm in a ground blind within 15 yards of a feeder so scent killing is important. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Based on your concerns and applications, I assume that you are operating under the notion that a hog can smell acorns 10 feet under ground, humans at 30 miles, etc. If the hog nose is that good, then what the hog is going to smell is a lot of scent killer on a human. After all, he can sort out the smell of an acorn through a lot of dirt full of animal waste, carcass, rotting roots, living plants, microbes, fungi, etc. So despite being masked by all those things, the hog can still find acorns, then he can probably still smell you...and all your cover scents.

Keep in mind that it isn't just human smell, but smells that are unfamiliar or that are particularly strong in a given location for which they should not be strong or weren't strong yesterday (assuming your blind stays up in one place over time).

I think you may be going overboard when you would be better served by making sure you are quiet and playing the wind.

This x 2. With all due respect, you are worrying way too much about it. All the gadgets in the world won't make you a better hunter.

Go hunting.

I didn't learn this by seeing it on TV, I learned it by doing it.

Right on the wind, I always play the wind. However I don't agree with the part about hogs being able to smell humans for 30 miles. If that were the case we would never even see them much less get near them for a shot. I do think that their nose is incredible though. I appreciate the input on me worrying about it too much, I probably am.

There is probably a more diplomatic way to get the point across, but the point is EXACTLY right. Keeping yourself downwind has worked for every species of predator for millions of years and it still works better than anything that comes out of a can and it always will work better.

Hogs associate a smell with a threat or food etc.. etc... If people are only feeding the hogs day after day never harming them they will come running when you come out to feed them, ie no threat. When you turn a spotlight and shoot at them they will scatter at the first sign of light. If you are always urinating around your feeder they will disassociate that smell with a threat if you leave them alone. I tried piss on thier trails(at night no one around) to see if it would keep them from using the trail going to the fields. I guess they didn't associate it with a threat, because they kept using the trail. i always keep the wind in my face lets me get 15-20yds at night.

When hunting hogs I sit on the back porch in my rocking chair, and wait for the hogs to walk up to the feeder.

Yeah guys I hear you on the wind. I always try to play the wind. That does not guard against everything though as by default your scent will be blowing downwind in some direction. I try to guess the direction that they will most likely not be coming from and make that the downwind of my scent. Sure when you play the wind right it's virtually impossible for them to smell you. But I do like that 99% scent killer for times that the wind shifts on you after you setup or for that inevetable downwind when you setup.

I guess that is a question... after you setup and the wind shifts and is potentially blowing your scent to the area that they are coming from wouldn't it make sense to at least have used something to cover your scent in case this happens?

Do what you can to minimize your scent best as possible. I approach fields from downwind when I am driving in case I see hogs and get out to stock them.

days before a hunt I have poured the corn over my head and left a dirty shirt out to desensitize them to my presence

You could dress a manikin in your clothes to leave in the stand when you aren't there and that way the animals get used to smelling you seeing 'you' in the stand.
