we had one that lived in the water valve box at our ranch. Scared the chit out of me every time we got there at midnight and I opened the box to turn the valve on. After him being there 3 trips in a row, I was ready and killed him on the 4th trip. I know he was supposedly a "good snake". I made him a "better" snake.

I chased down a coachwip a couple times, once he went under a bag of feed and I was able to grab. The other I took off on a dead sprint after picking up some tin he was under. Caught him after I dove for his tail. Great plan until I had to pick out the goat heads from my gut. We messed with him a bit and turned him loose. The are very doscile once you get past the first bite.

Sir the Coach Whip is probably the most aggresive snake we have in TX, not only have I had them make runs at me I've witnessed it on many others. One of my snake hunting buddies had to have a Cornea transplanr due to a Coach Whip hitting him in the eye when we were working the mouth of a snake den. More than once I've seen them make a run at people.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Saw this one crawl into a piece of pipe on the ground. I wanted his picture so I grabbed him by the tail and pulled.

The good news was I got his picture....even though he was mad as a hornet.

The bad news was he was wrapped around a rattlesnake when he came out of that pipe.... eek2

Sir...the next time you find yourself being "chased" by a coachwhip (or any snake for that matter), try stopping and seeing what happens. I got money says the snake stops it's "hot pursuit", doesnt bite you and infact goes the opposite way all on his own. I mean, unless you are walking some kind of really tiny dog that looks an awful lot like a rat.....
I am yet to meet a snake that was interested in chasing me down.

Wrong, they will chase. I have had it happen to me. And the snake had the opportunity to go the other way. And they can really move fast when they want to.

I had one of those things chase me 50 yards when I was squirrel hunting near Fairfield. He'd still be chasing me if I hadn't finally run past his burrow!

I was sitting in an old feeder outside of Abilene Spring turkey hunting when two mice came out of a hole in the floor. I knew a snake was next, but I would of had to get down on all fours to crawl out. No handgun and I didn't have room to point my shotgun anywhere but out through slots in the side. Expected a rattler but out comes a 7 foot coach whip. Know it was 7 ft. because his tail was still in the hole as his head left the feeder--measured it later. He never looked twice at me.

be careful - these things can 'fly' ... well, almost:

Came upon a large one, coiled up and striking at my rabbits in their rabbit coop. Didn't know what it was at the time, but knew it wasn the normal type of ratsnake or bullsnake that I always hand-catch and relocate. Knew it wasn't a rattler, copperhead, or moccassin. With hoe in hand, I took a swing at this thing - it immediately jumped onto hoe handle, then onto tree trunk that was couple feet away. Within a second or so, this thing streaked up about 10 feet, and then onto a branch that was directly over my head, coiled up and started lunging at me!! eek2

It 'coulda' went onto 5 other branches that went 'away' from me, but no, it picked the one directly over my head. I had aleady dropped (more like threw-down) the hoe and was stepping backwards. By now, the wife and older kids were there to see who was 'screaming like a little schoolgirl' - me!. I yelled at them to stay back, and keep an eye on on this 'wicked evil lightning snake' while I ran inside to get something. bolt

Normally I grab an old revolver with ratshot loads to deal with copperheads around the house. But no, this guy started a 'war' with me, and I was going to end it. I grabbed the 12ga pump and was jamming it full of 7.5's as I ran back out. Sure 'nuff it was still waiting for me up on that branch, all coiled up, so blam I let'em have it.

I felt just a little bit bad afterwards when we identified it as non-venomous, but this sucker was over 6ft, fast, and had 'a real bad attitude' and tree-climbing/flying skills that I didn't want to see passed on in the gene pool!!!.

I won't deny they get quite large, are fast as hell and have one very bad attitude when grabbed, persued or cornered. Still going to stand by my statements that they do not intentionally CHASE people.

The one that chased me was moving almost as I could run (and believe, you can run faster than you think) and his head was at least 2' in the air. It looked waist high but that's prolly cause I was stretched out like a Cheetah.

I have seen the mock charges from the coach whip, but you grab one and he will bite you 30 times before you can let go...trust me

As far as NO snake chasing you...bs

Chased a Rat Snake through a fence, when I hit the fence, he turned, came back through the fence and when I got to the road where I could better manage him, he didn't stop...he kept attacking.

Another snake that will chase you is a moccasin. Ended up dancing over the top of one that chased me away from my fish basket.

I grew up hearing about the Black Racers from my dad and a bunch of old folks. When more people worked the land, they were exposed to things more. Things we only encounter when hunting or "in the woods", they encountered on a daily basis in the course of the farming duties. My dad said he and his cousins would play with them for hours at a time, and the snakes never seemed to mind the attention. I have never seen one in person, and am kind of glad. After having been bitten by a Copperhead when I was young, I try to keep my distance from all snakes.

I see those out at camp quite often during the day when I am walking through the brush. They are generally watching me it seems as they have their head held high. None have chased me, generally they have slithered quickly away. I don't bother them, but I do carry a shotgun for the venomous snakes. We have alot of cotton mouths out there and if one of these guys approached me, I don't think that I would take time to identify him.
