For the second time in 3 years, hogs have destroyed one of my feeders and seemingly ran off with another. Cant find the barrel anywhere. Think I'm going with ground barrels this year with slits cut in the bottom and chained to a tree. Gets expensive replacing them over and over. Even had them stakes down with t posts and cables. The first time, we found barrels that had been rolled several hundred feet from where they were.

I finally went to hanging feeders also. One is on a big tripod, and the others are hanging from big oak tree limbs. I had to put a cage around the corn thrower on the tripod mounted rig. Coons would climb the tripod.

I do not put out feeders without hog panels around them anymore. The little hogs get in, but the big hogs can't and I have not lost a single feeder since.

Grease the legs, and those little $H*** won't climb your feeder anymore.

I too like hanging a feeder from a tree when I can or anchoring it to a tree limb such that if it does get bumped or moved some, it does not fall.

I have strung wire rope between two trees to hang a feeder. I had to load it be backing the truck underneath it, but even the squirrels and coons had issues with getting to the corn (though some still managed. I figured out that at least for the squirrels, they would leap from the wire to the motor when they found they could not get to the motor and funnel area down the side of the barrel, LOL.

I could have hooked up a pulley system to raise and lower the barrel, but driving up under the feeder was plenty convenient.

I would suggest you surround your feeders with hog panels like mentioned before! Placing them on the ground, even if chained to a tree will make things very interesting for the hungry pigs. Consider hunting them at night when they feel the most comfortable. Check out my lights at www.bigpiglights.com
