You may not know it, but your a cruel man. I normally kayak or canoe somewhere at least once a week during the summer. With the open flesh eating disease thing I had I have not been able to be on or in the water in almost three months now and still can't.
Disease complications and two months with zero activity has me beat me down with muscle loss and I NEED to get back to work. I drove up to the red yesterday morning to take a long hike along the river with the dogs for some serious rehab and heat acclimation. Dogs had fun, but it just about killed me. All I could think about the whole time was wishing I was on the river in one of my boats leasurely paddling and falling in to cool off now and then.
I will dig some pictures up here in a bit. So any progress with a pirogue hopedale?

The versatile K140 Predator I think I need one of them. What's the latest John on the leg? You getting closer to beating this thing or what? Prayers up, hope you are all well for hunting season.

Have a spot from the skin graft that is taking a long time to heal. And a problem caused by all the IV antibiotics wiping out my good bacteria that went too long and had me low sick. almost put me back in the hospital, but I think I have it beat. I am trying to go back to work in one to two weeks.

Hopefully you will have no more issues, still think it was a miracle to get it stopped in time.

Then there is the decked pirogue. I really would like to do more hunting out of this one this season. I do have a grass cover and an OD camo net cover, but so far I have jsut camoed it with whatever is on the lakeshore. This was a boat given to me that I restored for my purpose. Apparently it is not one of a kind. See the picture at duckboats.net. http://duckboats.net.nmsrv.com/specs/images/unknown12.jpgIf anyone knows more about it, maker?, kit boat?, I would live to know.

John, out of curiosity, what are the main differences between your wood pirogue and the kayak? To me they look like very similar craft but I'm guessing the pirogue might take a little more weight as I recall it's a bit wider.

Dave, you hit on one of my questions. Some of the places I go have a haul between where you can park and the waterline so weight is an issue. The fact that John takes Blaze is a big factor for me too.

The kayak which I really would call a hybrid between a canoe and a kayak is 68 pounds unloaded, but a high enough load rating to carry anything I need. It is comfortable, fast, and fairly stable for travel. I can range as far as time will allow. I can cart long distances and drag portage short distances. Too tippy and tight quartered for reliable open water hunting. I have to park it and move things around to hunt laying in it. Usually it is just transportation. The wood boat is a tank. Heavy and slow. I have taken it out and tried to tip it over and was unable to. There is no seat. I paddle sitting on gear, on my knees, or scull while laying down. A layout blind or back rest can fit in it. I can cart it short distances on level ground if I really have to, but I use a trailer and really need to be able to get close to the water to unload it and I need to be able to launch it near where I will be hunting. Any portage must be easy and short. It's main purpose for me is a floating layout blind that is stable enough that I can safely and quickly move and shoot well from any position. It also works extremely well as a sneak boat drifting or skulling into birds if I so choose. Both boats I position where I sit or hunt so that the dog has room behind me. A dog moving around the front messes up the balance and tracking of the boat and is dangerous for the dog to be in front if you do any shooting. Though the wood boat is wide enough that I have scooted the layout over enough to let the dog lay next to me while hunting.

That's a very good point John, I never got the chance to chase those geese with you and blaze, but have always offered advice and been very helpful to me. If you ever need someone to load or unload that yak, give me a shout. I'd probably learn a lot while dragging it around for you anyway.

Waiting on the pirogue plans with correct dimensions on the internal components. Actually ordered them today and if weather permitting will glue the sides tomorrow when I get home from work. I've been looking at a yak in Academy. While the pirogue is a project, I already know yaks tend to be more stable. Defiantly want to get used to one or the other before the season, or more importantly, while the water is warm.

Hopedale,
Let me know if you need an extra set of hands with certain parts of your build. I'd be happy to help out.

If hunting with someone else I do prefer two solo boats over a tandem. I also have an old 9ft mainstream for guests to tag along if they don't have their own boat. And yes, Aggiepoint, 8pointdrop, or anyone else, it would be great to get together with some other kayakers next season if the time works out. But I do work shift work, so know it seldom works out with the weekend warriors. And as always I will be covered with permits for any lake in N TX that requires one.

Last are my canoes. I have had one since I was 5 years old and have paddled rivers all over Texas, Texas Water Safari finisher, Rio Grande in Colorado and Big Bend, Rivers in Arkansas and Oklahoma, running yo yos on Caddo as a kid, Everglades trails, etc. I often use this one if taking a new hunter or family. Where the canoe really shines is jumping ducks on creeks. I take two paddles, set the gun in front of me on the rails usually tethered with a long lanyard in case it gets dropped off the boat and quietly scull around bends jump shooting surprised wood ducks and mallards. Being in a higher position sitting up it makes the shots much easier than in a kayak. When the birds flush, the paddle is dropped even if mid stroke. Grab gun and make the shots. Then pick up the other paddle to retrieve the first paddle and birds. If solo I put a seat balanced in the middle for better control or if I need to put the dog behind me. No dog is needed, but nice to have along for any birds that might fall up on land or in the woods so I don't have to get out of the canoe. If hunting tandem, we take turns shooting. The person in front sits at ready with gun and is the only shooter while the paddler quietly manuevers the canoe around the bends of the creek.

Thanks Ed.
John, the boats look good.
I'm still waiting on the email version of the plans. It has the measurements, so I can recut the stems. Neighbor has all the wood working tools and cut them for me, but I think there to big. He's offered to recut if I get the measurements.
