ttha did do an article about a shrimper who hunts in king county, and he did shoot some whoppers, but he was quoted as saying sometimes he went DAYS without seeing a single deer.

It cracks me up that so many people think deer don't exist in this state north of, say, Waco.
name one town north of waco that is synonomyis (sp?) with whitetail deer hunting?
throckmorton and shackleford counties were big back in the late 90's but i haven't heard much about them, good or bad, in a long while.
not hurt anyone's feelings who dont' hunt there, but when people from out of state think texas deer hunting, they think hill country and south texas, with the panhandle getting an good nod now and then, not lufkin or guthrie
Our towns up here aren't "synonymous with deer hunting" only because of posts like yours. You guys simply don't consider that big deer exist outside of your little mecca down there.
I hunt in South Texas every so often, and I love it every time I go. In fact, I killed my second best bow buck in Maverick County this past season (but he's still well behind a deer from one of those non-deer-producing counties), so you're not "hurting my feelings" one bit. But the fact is that many of us don't need to travel down there to find big deer. I do find it quite amusing, though, that you'd think I'd get my feelings hurt if I didn't have the great privilege you have to hunt South Texas. Those of us who don't call South Texas home are still doing quite well when it comes to deer hunting. Plus, I bet if you took the pens out of the equation it might equal things up a bit (not trying to start an argument, just bringing to light one of the realities that skews the numbers in favor of S. Tx.).

when i counted there are six towns that i listed that are nowhere close to being in south texas.
think that makes it a pretty unbiased statement.
as for the pen comment, long before high fences, south texas was still the go to place, because of low hunting pressure,large land tracts and big deer.
the original post was arguing that there are alot more well known and perhaps "better" places to hunt deer that guthrie, not whether or not south texas is better.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have hunted most of the hill country from one end to the other for the last 35 years. What I would find more interesting story, would be which town has the most Deer hunting atmosphere. My opinion would be Mason Texas.

The main difference between south tx and west tx is publicity. Knowbody in west tx tries to put there hunts out on the market because they dont want to become like south tx. I really would love to hunt a cool ranch down in south tx, just because its a different style of hunting.

I agree with crazyhorse ,baylor ,throckmorton ,archer and all those counties produce numbers of big bucks every year ,i have a friend thats a taxi, in seymour and has had a ton of 150+ deer brought in this past year ,that part or the country is a sleeper

theres always been big deer in throckmorton county. my buddy used to lease there and would kill a 150 class deer every year.
just not as many deer numbers as other places

Agreed about Throckmorton. Thats where my first deer lease was and I saw some giants, but they were always at dusk or at night. If I could get on another lease it would in Throckmorton or Shackleford.
Ok Ok what about the Waggoneer ranch up between Wichita Falls and Vernon. Anybody thats a serious trophy hunter would probably give there left arm to go on a hunt on this ranch. Id be willing to bet that there's more B&C deer on that ranch then anywhere in Texas including the high fence places!

The biggest difference also was there wasn't many deer 15 years ago out there to really hunt like you can now. Still is hit and miss. W. Tex is made up of ag, oil, cows. S. Texas is missing two of those for the most part. There are a ton more bruisers in S. Tex than W. Tex. b/c you have to hunt the shelter belts and cover between ag and native pasture. In S. Tex, it is 100% cover. W. Tex you are more prone to drought, wind that never stops, and freezing temps on opening day. S. Tex is luxury that you pay to play and more people who pay don't want to deal with those elements.

Next town WEST of Throckmorton is Haskell & I used to live just north of there. As long as I was up there(5+yrs) & as much as I was out & around that area, it was RARE to see deer, especially BIG bucks. Im not saying they arent up in that area, just not in great numbers & Im sure the ones that are monsters are far & few & in hiding.
Not much to hide in up there, they keep clearing more & more timber for ugly cotton feilds

My best friends relatives ranch is right next door to the 6666 ranch.I've done alot of quail hunting on it and lately we have been getting up extra early just to get out and see the whitetails.No commercial hunting just family and it's a very large ranch(30 thousand acres+).Not many deer but the ones you do see are rather large.I would pay a lot of money to hunt it.I would leave my lease in south texas I've been on for 14 years.

What South Texas deer hunters should know if they don't is the size of the deer compared to the two areas. West Texas deer are considerably larger. And here again the answer is obvious why so. Deer population is not as dense as South Texas hence the less inner breeding is going on. The smaller deer in South Tx. is due to a residual effect from years of poor management and aging deer that were harvested. And BTW Coleman/Brown?Taylor/ Runnels ain't sloucher counties for deer hunting!!   Score 148 1/3 field dressed 159 lbs  This cull buck scored almost 140, field dressed 161 lbs and was taken on low-fence property.
