I have always regretted getting rid of my old FAL, so I have been on the lookout for another for a while. I put in a bid on Gunbroker for this"new" L1A1 one.

Out of the box, the gun cycled everything perfectly. Shot a mix of Portugal surplus, Wolf, Winchester Ball, and all functioned flawlessly. BUT the groups I was getting were pretty bad, like size of softball bad.


I already knew I was gonna cut it down when I bought it. After I removed the flashhider from the factory I discovered the factory barrel really didn't have much of a crown at all.

I cut her down to 18 inches and recrowned it to 11 degrees. I am now very happy with the groups I am getting!! I am taking it to my land this weekend to bust some hogs, I am happy to own a fal/SLR again.

Not too shabby groups for open sights. I am ordering a DSA mount and will put an EOTECH on it now.

I have always liked the FAL over the M14 as a battle rifle. Good looking gun, congrats on the purchase and groups.

Thanks bud! I have as well, the FAL was probably gonna be adopted by the US (T48 designation) over the M14, but politics got in the way and tests were rigged in the Mcnamara era.

Love the OD furniture on that one. How is the eye relief running that EOTech/magnifier setup?

Eye relief was good. Thats actually my old nightvision and not a magnifier (MUM 3rd gen monocular, now use a PVS14 which is just a tad bigger).

I am resetting this one up in the exact same configuration, I think the eotech is the perfect FAL optic in my opinion.

Yea, I love that od as well. I want to get some for this one, but not sure if the STG58 furniture (metric) will fit this L1A1, but I am gonna try to find some for it for sure.

Cool gun. If I could choose my top 3 semi-autos theyd be AR10, M1A, and FAL. Ive always been attracted to FALs the most though

I keep thinking about getting a Century FAL but have heard the groupings are terrible. Are those guns even worth the effort to make them more accurate?

I want to love the Eotech but all of them I've had have eaten batteries like no tomorrow. Spent the coin on an aimpoint M4, now I can leave my optic turned on for a few years on one AA.
