I just bought a leftover permit for unit 14 in Kansas. Im only 24 and never really hunted out of state before but I finally have a job that allows me the time to do it. Im just curious as to how the public land hunting is and if anyone has any places they have had any luck in the unit. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks

What permit did you buy? Archery, muzzleloader or rifle? Did you buy your license too? What made you choose 14?

I bought an archery permit. I also bought the license. I wanted unit 16 because I had heard a lot of good things about the area but those tags were all gone so I chose 14 because it looked like it had plenty of public land to hunt. Like I said, Im kind of new to this kind of stuff so I just rolled the dice really. I just know there are probably more good spots than bad in that state.

There are alot of good spots and 14 is highly rated in the state. I have a lease in area 14. It is kind of a pain, but you can open the Fall Hunting Atlas, open the Kansas Deer Management Map and Google Earth. Switch between them using roads and cities to determine where the actual location of the public walk in areas are. By using Google Earth, you will get a good idea of the cover and terrain. Very few seem to have crops, so you want to find good cover or travel corridors. Here is the link to the Fall Hunting Atlas. You can click on an "area" to zoom in. Keep in mind that the areas listed here are not the same as the one on your permit. http://kdwpt.state.ks.us/news/KDWPT-Info/Locations/Hunting-Fishing-Maps-by-County/Fall-Hunting-Atlashere is the link to the Kansas Deer Management Map. Notice that 14 is between HWY's 77 and 75 to the East and West and 70/54/160 to the North and South. http://www.kdwpt.state.ks.us/Hunting/Hunting-Regulations/Maps/Kansas-Deer-Management-Unit-MapKansas roads are laid out in a grid pattern. You should be able to focus in on an area and find the location fairly easily. If I can help with anything, let me know...and Good Luck

That'd be awesome. I work 7 days on and 7 days off so if all goes as planned I want to try to go up once before season to look around.

I would think that is a must. Try to find areas that are in the same central location. I am going to shoot you a PM with some that I looked at that might work pretty good

Just plan on going up there both weeks you have off in Nov, last year the 15th to the 30th was the best time. This year could be different you just never know.

Last year seemed to be later than normal for the rut, from what I have seen. I know the rifle season was better than normal in alot of places since the rut was still trickling during the season.

Thanks for the input guys. I looked at my schedule and I will be able to go during most of November. Really excited about this. One of my weeks off will be Nov. 13-19. I think that should be a really good time. Can you hang stands on public land up there or not? I read some regulations but couldn't find anything about it.

Yea you can hang stands only problem is people stealing them. I use my crappy stands for public land with a cable and lock but that only keeps the honest guy honest. Best thing to do is get a good climber and try and find some nice trees for it. Sometimes if I feel like it's a safe place and if I'm using the same tree in the morning I leave the climber on the tree at the bottom (maybe with a lock on it) or I take it off the tree and hide it under a dead fall nearby and cover with leaves. You can also leave your lock on up and unscrew your steps and screw them back in in the morning. But like I said if you leave it there more then a few days or a week some loser will bring his own steps and get your stand. When I moved to Kansas I bought every lock on I could find for under $30.00 each, now I have a crap load of stands. Only problem is I'm moving to Texas next week, the good thing is I have a Kansas lifetime licence.

B_mac, you do know that since you have a permit to hunt unit 14, you can hunt any unit that it borders right? That is the entire East side of Kansas!

You can pick one unit that borders it.

I never had anything stolen in KS. I have often said that those are the best folks I have ever run into.

Yes, the rules up there have changed dramatically the last few years, the farmers use to be able to get a perimt (that was transferable) for every 80 acres they had. It was a huge money maker for them.

You can pick one unit that borders it. It was my understanding that you could pick one that borders it, but it had to be listed as a secondary on your license.

Unit 14 has some bruisers, the further east you go in the unit, the less pressure on the deer. To the west is Wichita and the north is Kansas City/Topeka.

Yea it gave me an option to pick a unit that borders 14. I chose 12 and it also says 19 on it. I have also seen on here where people have had good luck with asking some landowners if they could hunt for a couple of days so I might try that also. Thanks for all of the input guys. Its nice to have a place where people will actually share some good info.

So if I buy an archery tag that borders unit 5 and have them list 5 as a secondary I can hunt 5?

That is the way that I understand it Cam.
Say you buy one for 15 and list 5 as the secondary, I think you can hunt both.
Say that 15 is out of tags, but 5 still has some. List 5 as the primary and 15 as the secondary, and you can still hunt.
(Take this information with a grain of salt. I have only heard this and not verified it, but it came from a reliable source)
