Well, I paid $230 with free shipping for my Pentax DCF 10x42's and I am more than satisfied with them. The 8x42's may be right there in the $200 price range. You gotta be more specific.

Just piicked up Vortex Diamond Backs 10x42 for $229 + tax. I know a little out of your range (8x42 are $219). Played with them a little yesterday and I am very pleased with the results. I wish I would have dropped the extra $100 a couple of years ago, but I am on the cheaper side. Not saying I would have seen more animals, but they are lighter and the glass is much better than my old lower end Bushnells.

Bump. I'm in the same boat right now. Nikon's get a lot of good press. It seems like the price goes up for smaller, and down for larger for the same quality glass. Prostaff 7 are priced great, but are bigger and heavier. Monarch's about $100 more for smaller/lighter. But there are so many models, it's hard to figure out which are old models being cleared out and new ones. Pricing seems all over.
Leupold have a few in that same price range.

Redfield makes a good bino for about $150 bucks. 10x42 Rebels. I have these binos and they are very clear. Lifetime warranty and made by Leupold now. They are a lil on the heavy side but for what you save just buy a bino harness and they aren't bad at all.

Almost forgot the Vortex Crossfire's are comparable to the Rebels but feel lighter in hand. The glass seems about the same to me but these should be 2 bino's in your price range that should work.

I think the Redfield binoculars are made in Japan while their scopes are made in the Leupold plant. I was told this by a retailer who pushes the Redfield pretty hard and also sells the Leupold. He lets you take them outside and compare them side by side. I went to the cheap side on bino's and bought the Leupold Mesa 8x23. I have been very pleased with them and found them on sale around $90. I chose these for hunting because they are very light and compact and 100% waterproof. Hunting bino's that are not waterproof is a joke in my opinion. As far as light draw they do not compare to the bigger glass but still pick up before my VXII 3-9x40 in the early morning. My wife does not like using them because she says everything looks like its in 3D compared to her Bushnells. Oh, yeah, they are also rubber coated and feel very good in the hand, I havn't dropped mine yet thanks to the rubber. And yes I drop alot of stuff. My hands are not what they used to be. Obviously the more you spend the better glass you can get but unless you are hunting open country with over 300yd ranges these are awesome. They are clear and sharp and I Have tested to that range. I have not tested beyond.
OK, im done

I think Vanguard makes a great binocular for the money. Currently have 3 pair. But selling the 2 new ones as they almost duplicate the ones I already have.

Lately bought a Redfield Rebel 10x42 and compared them with Nikon 10x42 ATB. About the same quality. To me the view was close to the same so it's a toss up. Only difference was the Nikon was a little lighter. Probably all about the same in that price range.

I've got the Redfield 10x42's as well. Had a problem with on of the eyepieces on the first pair I purchased. Contacted Leupold about the problem and they asked me to send them in. They said they would either repair mine or send me a new pair. Now I had attached some small zip ties that work in conjunction with my crooked horn outfitters bino-systems and came with the system. I wrote them a not stating that I wasn't removing the small zip ties just in case they repaired the binos and sent them back to me. Well they sent me a brand new pair so my zip ties were still stuck on the old pairs probably headed for disposal. I called the company explained the situation. The guy answering the phone said that the girl that takes care of binos was already gone for the day, however he would go downstairs and get me some small zip ties and mail them that day! I got them a couple days later right in time for a hunt I was going on. I couldn't have been more pleased with the Leupold service I received on a pair of $150 dollar optics! All I can say is OUTSTANDING!
