It happens for sure I thought we were going to see a over sized bobcat but when we got there it was a lion. Few weeks after that we found pad tracks 4 inches across in fisher just north of palava (spelling). I think that one was a good size cat.

J-F I don't think you have to worry too much. You sould consider yourself lucky to ever see such a secretive animal.

I can assure you the group of ones they are claiming to be aournd Lubbock is false. The picture had pine trees in the back ground, and we all know Lubbock doesn't have any trees grin

I dont remember seeing any pine trees in the picture only the bluff, so how do you explane the cat seen in Lorenzo with the city limit sign in the for ground, i also know the rancher who had the 2 colts that were killed, have known him for over 40 years, i know he wasent pulling my leg.

I ran Coon and Cat Hounds for years until I finally got too old to keep up and stay out all nite...We have Mountain Lions, Bobcats, and Jagarundi's all over So. Texas, parts of West Texas
which may also have an occasional Jaguar, and parts of East Texas
including the Big Thicket...ect...You'll always find some folks
who wouldn't agree, and could'nt see one standing in front of them...I had to show my wife a Mtn. Lion Female w/2 young cubs
over by Quihi one time when I was helping a guy break a mule..
she came into the road below Medina Lake about 8miles..I also
ran about 5 different big cats around the lake, and Helotes area

In 1982 I saw a couple of lions a trapper and his dogs caught on the DCRC. He said there were more there than anyone suspected. Of course the DCRC was a rather large chunk of real estate.

My brother and I were spring Turkey hunting in LaSalle cty. years ago and walked up on a freshly killed head of a nubbin buck, nothing but the head. It was wet and stinky-fresh kilt. We thought maybe hogs had done it. Later when we talked to the rancher he said it was probably a Cougar that he had seen on the place... A few years later I saw one in a wheat field near the Colorado river in McCullough cty. Sorry no pics available.

In 1979 we hunted on the Welder/Dobie Ranch 55 miles east of Encinal and when we met the ranch foreman the first thing out of his mouth was" Hello, my name is Le___y and you don't f**# with the mountain lions". The ranch had a deal with TPWD and problem lions were trapped all over the state, collared and released on the ranch, some big study that the rancher was probably paid a lot for. We never saw one but did hear them a couple of times. On the same ranch we were also told we could kill "A" coyote if we wanted to but not to kill all we saw. I have never hunted anywhere else that even came close to the amount of game we saw. Lots of hogs, bobcats, coyotes, fox, javelina, alligator in one stock pond and plenty of big deer. So yeah there are cougars in Texas, pretty much all over the state. I have personally seen them in Jones, Fisher and Borden County.

Welder/Dobie was actually about 25 miles east of Cotulla on Hwy 624. Herb Post was the foreman for Pat Welder who owned the Dobie and the Cameron. There was a study like you are talking about was done in conjunction with the TPWD were field work began in 1994 along the Nueces River area. The study area was on ranches from 400 acres to 50,000 acres. They had collared 17 cats from 1994 till the article was written in Jan. 1997 to study them. Article also said that in the previous 3 yrs that deer hunters had killed about 60 lions across the state.

I have seen 2. One in Webb county and one in Refugio county. Both times I was riding around in a truck and just happened to make a bend in the road in time to see it standing in the road. They dont stand around long when that happens.

One thing I did notice in the Hill Country, when we get a lion
or two, the deer are scarce...something to do with the food chain....Most of the Texas P&W Bio. don't believe you see a cat
much less a Mtn. Lion,Jagurundi, or any of the exotics...might
have something to do with setting in the ofc...DD

I talked to an outfitter in Idaho one time. They have the highest density of cougar in the US in his unit. He told me they hunt em with dogs and said they can tree as many as 4-5 per day when hunting. He said if it weren't for the dogs you would never know they are there. You could hunt by yourself for years and never see one. He said they will hear/see you long before you know they are there and they will lay down and watch you. Scary stuff. I've heard one in Maverick Co before. Never have seen one though. Some friends of mine had a lease near Piedras Negras right on the border and were rattling one day during deer season and a cougar came charging in looking for an easy meal. They shot it and said it weighed around 200 lbs and had a head the size of a dinner plate! They are here, you just won't see one unless you are lucky or use dogs.
