Curious to see how many they actually sent out. Anybody else get one?. Needs a larger comment box.

The only thing that I harvested was out of my garden. I did, however, kill three deer.

My neighbor and hunting partner got one the other day and he filled it out and sent it in. I didn't get one, and I asked him what kind of questions did it ask? He said that it was pretty simple and aked what type of hunting did you do? What did you harvest during each particular season, how many days did you hunt each season such as archery, gun, muzzleloader, and what did you take during those seasons, and how many and the sex of the deer, and what county. I asked if it asked for any opinions on how to better improve the season or leave room for a comment, and he said it did not. What I see is strange is not everyone seems to have gotten a survey, and they don't even bother to ask for feedback on what you thought they could do to make it better. Sounds like a waste of time and money to me, but then again what should I expect from TPWD? I kind of take it they don't care for or want any opinions concerning AR's!

Its just like your friend described, but has a small area for comments. That is why I was asking, they take a migratory game bird survey when you get a license, but this is the first time tpwd has sent me a deer survey. Ive never hunted out of state, but are other states requiring hunters to report every deer harvested either at check in stations or sending in license logs?

This survey is voluntary, and not required, but what good is it if every licensed hunter doesn't/or not given the chance to fill one out? That to me, is a waste of time and money that could go to....lets say state parks! They don't even ask for feedback on what you saw during your hunts that could better serve the populations in your county thus saving some shoe leather from the biologist. Just my opinions.

If I got one and posted how many I deer I killed this season the next thing I heard would be the GW knocking on my door.

Glad to see they're making such an effort. Every TPWD biologist that I have spoken with doesn't believe anything other than what they see for themself.

Ive never hunted out of state, but are other states requiring hunters to report every deer harvested either at check in stations or sending in license logs? I didnt get on either. I hunted Missouri twice and they send you one plus you have to telecheck any deer/turkey killed. Illinois is the same way. Telecheck and they want to know a lot of details...points, measurements, etc. They also ask how many turkeys and bobcats you see.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

We hunted New Mexico for mule deer and you are required to complete a harvest survey no matter the results. If you don't there is a fee when applying the next year and it said that if you didn't complete your report that it may keep you from getting the license.
I didn't get a harvest report from TPWD but I had a guy bring one in my office yesterday. I don't necessarily believe it is a waste just because they didn't send every hunter a report. It is nothing more than a survey and that doesn't require every person to participate in order to get an accurate estimate of what the results might have been.

So how do you get an accurate estimate if everyone doesn't participate? Accurate and estimate shouldn't even be in the same sentence! That is why we now have AR's and why so many have legitamate gripes about the law. Precisely why some posters, and you yourself above gave examples where other states make it mandatory, so.....Either make it mandatory to get it accurate or don't do it at all, which like I said, is a waste of money.

Your right about accurate and estimate not needing to be in the same sentence. I guess their not needing exact numbers but just a general idea of the harvest data.
Nothing worse than when they would ask you while purchasing a license and people would say they killed 1500 birds or some made up crap like that.
Companies do surveys all the time and make decision based on them. It is not out of the realm of possibilities that they could gather enough data to make decision by having a random survey.

if you get into qualitative and quantitative analysis of data, you understand that you have to select a size population that represents the whole. Based on the size of the whole, you select a percentage that will give you a good idea of how everyone would respond. They are not looking for individual responses and opinions, which is why there is no box for comments. Its not that they do or dont care, its just not the purpose of this survey.
Lots of things are done this way. Product surveys, television ratings, etc.
You may nit like AR's, but I dont think you can point to this survey and say that TPWD is screwing things up. In fact, I would bet that an outside company is conducting the survey and reporting the results to the TPWD.
