Has anybody hunted the "Winkel Ranch Hunting Lease"? If so, your opinion.

I have hunted on them years ago and they were way over hunted. Most of the time never seen a deer. Beware ! Day hunted hard.

Me and a friend went out there a few years back, we hunted a pasture that was called the Kauthman pasture or something similar. My buddy saw 3 deer in 2 days, all of which were bucks, and shot the biggest one. It was about a 16'' 8 point. I didn't do so well. To be fair about it I was sick, and coughed pretty much constantly. I didn't see anything until the very last hunt, and I saw 3 does. Shot at the biggest one and missed. The stands that were in place were decent, but there was one corn feeder on the pasture and it was at a central location nowhere near any of the stands. So we corned the roads by the stands we hunted. This is the smallest pasture they have that we hunted, not sure how the other pastures are set up. We had a good time anyway, and actually saw a lot of deer sign. It was after Thanksgiving when we went and I'm sure that had something to do with it being late in the season. If it had been earlier in the season and I hadn't been sick things might have been different. The lady that booked the hunt was very friendly and honest. You probably won't kill a monster there anyway, so if you are just looking for meat for the freezer you could probably look around and find a doe/spike hunt a little cheaper and be more successful.

I can honestly say I have been hunting the winkle ranch off and on for nearly 20 years, and have always killed deer, some years it seems like there is a deer behind every bush other years for whatever reason there arnt as many moving but I always seem to kill my deer and usually a hog too. I've been taking my sons for several years now and we have many fond memories deer hunting the hill country on Mrs. Brooks Winkel Ranch. I can hunt anywhere I want and I always return there don't expect to kill a wall hanger every year but my group usually always kills an exceptional buck. Usually late n the season is best it seems for the bigger bucks.they been limiting hunters to 8 pt or better and spikes for a few yrs now so plan to see more maturedeer.

Had a group of hunters go December 2011. Hunted hard. Did not see a single deer on any of the property. Didn't even see any running while we drove in or out. These people should be ashamed for taking hard earned money from unsuspecting hunters. I know the "Buyer beware" adage and i guess you cant expect too much from a day hunt but this was horrible. DO NOT USE THE WINKEL RANCH IF YOU SERIOUSLY WANT TO TRY AND KILL A DEER or any other animal.

Buckslammer, my hats off to you if you actually kill deer on the Winkel Ranch. My group of 6 hunters never saw a deer, hog, turkey or even a squirrel. The land is desolate. We didn't even see very many tracks. You and your group must go the 1st weekend of the season and catch them before they are all spooked away. I dont expect much from a day hunt ranch but these people should be ashamed for taking the hard earned money from unsuspecting hunters that think anywhere around Llano has to have deer. The unsuspecting city boys would have as good a chance sitting on a downtown street corner in Dallas as hunting this goat farm.

I find it funny for buckslammer to have one post in 5 months just to defend this ranch. I've heard a lot of stories about this place and they all end in there aren't any deer left there

I hunted that small pasture last year and I agree with you guys, I got lucky and shot a doe, there were cows everywhere and when I put corn out the cows stayed on it. They should be ashamed taking money like they do. I was told there wouldn't be any cattle on the place during deer season but there was. I didn't see a buck and the only corn feeder they had was no where near any of the stands. I would not recommend this ranch to anyone. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. Like others i thought there were deer all around the Llano area. Best part of the trip was eating at Coopers BBQ

My dad hunted the winkel ranch for about 10 years straight, I went twice and like everone else has said, it was way over hunted and it seemed like there were deer skeletons everywhere you took a step. On the last day of my second trip i shot a doe. i was 12 then and im 27 now. I have never considered going back there.
