Rather than hijack any of the various threads that discuss Red Deer....I decided to put this small rant in its own thread.

This is just something that bugs the CRAP out of me....and I think it's mostly due to people not knowing. So here I go.... wife

When people refer to "Red Stag".....they use it to describe the entire species, when it's actually meant to describe only the MALE specimen of the European Red Deer.

There is NO SUCH THING as a "Red Stag cow" or a "Red Stag bull".....

Males should technically be referred to as "Red Deer stags".....and females are "Red Deer hinds" (sounds like the Ketchup brand)....

....or if you want to make it short...."Red Stag" (male) and "Red Hinds" (females).

I know most people just don't know any better....so hopefully this explains things to those people a little better. If you go to New Zealand and a female Red Deer walks out and you say to your guide "WOW....look at that Red Stag cow!!"....he WILL laugh at you, I promise.

Sorry, but it was bugging me grin

True, true. I did a litlle hunting in Germany a few years back while stationed there. Loved all the customs. shot a hind and a boar. Never had a chance at a roe deer.

Wade,
I think your getting a little carried away on it.

In Texas I have seen red deer marketed as;
English Park Stags
Park Stags
German Stags
Red Deer
Red Stags
and at least a couple more.

Stag in American hunting English means a buck that was wounded and grows strange antlers that never harden out of velvet.

Stag in the Queens english of course refers to the male of the Red Deer species. Fallow bucks are actually called Fallow bucks in the UK and in the rest of Europe.

For some reason here in Australia; fallow bucks are called fallow stags. As all male deer in Australia are called stags.

You can raise your blood pressure if you want but it won't solve anything.

clearly you know what they are referring to...so what does it matter? No point in offending someone that may have less knowledge of an exotic species.

I've noticed some outfitters have both sexes of "wild boar" too.
It's a freaking pig people there's males and females. Boars are not female.

Reminds me of my co-worker who said she worked at a dairy and used to milk bulls. I should have asked for her number before she got fired.

Eland, In the Tx exotic trade, Red Stag is often used to describe elk/red deer hybrids rather than pure red deer. Just a note - your peeve is duly noted - we don't do a good job of common nomenclature, and tend to go with the 'sexiest' sounding name. . . .the best I've seen yet was an angora labled a 'New Zealand Mtn. Goat'

I'll throw out the funniest and most unbelievable one that I have seen. It was not a wrong name for an animal but is along the same line. I saw a website for exotic ram hunts in Alabama. They had several pictures of what I would guess to be borderline bronze medal corsican rams with the caption underneath reading "Another Boone and Crockett Corsican", "Two Boone and Crocket Corsicans killed this morning". I got a good laugh, I checked the website just now and it is no longer available... wonder why.

Actually wildboar is what it is called.

Feral pigs are usually called feral pigs, feral hogs, wild hogs, wildboar, in New Zealand some folks call them Captain Cookers, and some folks in America say Russian Boar.

Wikipedia has this to say: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_boar

"The term boar is used to denote an adult male of certain species — including, confusingly, domestic pigs. However, for wild boar, it applies to the whole species, including, for example, "wild boar sow" or "wild boar piglet".

Wild boar are also known by various names, including wild hogs or simply boars. In North America they are more commonly referred to as razorbacks or European boars."

In Europe Wildboar is the correct name, regardless of weather it is a sow, boar, piglet, or a weaned pig.

No sense in getting wrapped around the handle over what people call them.

I actually had a hunter pass up a spanish goat billy because he wanted a 'catalina'. I tried to tell him they were one in the same, but he was having none of it.

The term Corsican, Texas Dall, and Black Hawaiian were all coined by exotic producers, and they are just a mouflon and barbados cross.

The sheep in the Hawaiian islands that were released by Captain Cook's ships in the 1700s have wool.

As do the sheep he released in New Zealand that ended up being what we now call Arapawa rams.

I think we should just call everything that isn't a pure mouflon, urial, or bighorn a hair sheep crossbred.

Or a polycerate hair sheep crossbred.

Have you heard the current [censored] on the polycerate (multi horned, 4 horned) hair sheep? The idiots are calling them dragon rams. Dragon rams? Seriously?

Then again, the jacobs and navajo churro 4 horn rams people have been shooting for ages have been given all kinds of interesting names and back storys.
