Well,

Ole bdjag (Brian) headed up from the metromess...and we headed out to the feild...

Decided to hunt on of my ponds due to the wind this morning...

Set up and 15 minutes before LST...the birds started pouring in...

I was worried about that...being a blue bird day and all...that they would all come in before LST...

Had several pairs and small groups land...(which would have easily filled our limits)

Finally LST came and we started shooting...

The birds worked good...but the faucet turned off by the time the sun came up...

Ended with only 3 a peice...but saw enough birds...they just came in too early...

Had a great time in the field...

J.J.

Brian and Brandy with the birds...

We then went over to Hagerman...and check out what was over there...

Saw several trucks pulled off the side of the road...and saw these two guys...

Then I almost drove off the road when we looked over and saw this guy!!!!!!!

Ah, a pair of the world famous greater greater longneck snow geese. Cut 'em.

I hear you get lots of attention from the game wardens when you roll one. Even the federal guys want to come by and have a chat.

Is it just me, or does it seem that has been happening a lot this season vs past seasons.

It sure has happened to us a bunch this season, especially lately. Birds have been quitting on us before eight o'clock and the late flight, if there is one, isn't until sometime after ten.

Nice cinnamon teal. I had one mounted that i took in Mexico back '89. Don't see to many of those around here.

Must be nice to be able to hunt all the time!!! I'm jealous.

Whenever those big white birds are around, so are the Federal boys ! Shut down hunting around Kirwin in Kansas this year for couple of weeks while they were there !! I sure wouldn't even joke about hunting them !
That Cinnamon is awesome !!

So what the hell are we talking about here? I can't even tell what kind of birds they are....they don't look like sandhill cranes for sure, and don't really look like snows either.

For those that don't know those big Arse White birds are Whooping Cranes...

Endangered and Federally protected!

Shoot one, go to jail and collect one hell of a fine...

And "yes" I wouldn't even joke about shooting one!

Yeah, whoopers. Otherwise known as a $10,000 fine, $5,000 to $10,000 in restitution, possible jail time and revocation of hunting privileges.

Those whooping cranes are cool lookin. I've never seen them this far north. Seen'em in Port Aransas a couple times. Big sumguns they are!!!

Neat to watch when they get to dancing around.

Aren't they up to 60 something birds now? I know they were tracked or have been tracked from the time they were hatched. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those vehicles was a biologist tracking them.

They're up over 250 birds now. Besides the birds that are born in the wild, USF&WS raises chicks to supplement the wild population and releases them for the migration.

I have never seen one this far north, either. Only ones I have ever seen were on Matagorda Island.

Cool information on Whooping Cough er Cranes:

Whooping Cranes

Quote:

Whooping cranes migrate throughout the central portion of the state from the eastern panhandle to the DFW area and south through the Austin area to the central coast during October-November and again in April. If you sight a whooping crane during migration or away from the coast during the winter, then please contact the Wildlife Diversity Program at 1-800-792-1112 x4644 or mark.klym@tpwd.state.tx.us. />
