Here is a pic of my deer I just got back. What do you all think about the way it looks?

One of my friends did it. I love the way it came out and so does everyone that looks at it. Just wondering what you guys thought.

Thing that really stands out to me is the painting on the eyes.Looks like he is wearing mascara and on the last pic the hide isnt pulled down quite enough.

Duck,

What color do you use around the eyes?

Around the eyes use a mix of flesh, rich brown and dark brown to fit the deer. A great trick used to soften the tone of the eyes is to use lt-dk brown powder eye make-up right after you spray your color. Brush on with a very small, delicate brush.

Thanks for the tip. I have done only three deer mounts as a hobbyist, and have ended up with the dark ring around the eye. It has gotten lighter since the first deer, but still too dark. I'll figure out how to post pics and send pics of the deer I have done.

You're not trying to paint it, just highlight what is already there...transparent

Here are pics of my mounts. This is the 2nd and 3rd mounts I have ever done. The 8 pt. is my second, and the 10 pt. is my 3rd. What do you think? I love working on the mounts. I'd like to get into the habitat stuff and learn how to do birds next. Like I said, I am doing this as a hobby. Well, I actually charged for these two mounts, but I do not have a business.

Just remember the bottom lip is only to be as wide as the bottom of nose.Deer dont have black lacrimal glands. You should try and get hair touching hair there.

Thanks for the critique. I am trying to get better. I, unfortunately have one person I have done mounts for, and he moved to Oklahoma. He just wrote me and said he was probably going to use someone closer to him for his 151 B&C 11 pt. he got this year.

Looks good to me to, what I did notice is that the nose is a little to shinny maybe it will fade with time

If I put my wife in a high fence will her rack get bigger?

I used to mount over 100 deer a year from 1999 to 2004. I will tell you that I am a stickler in regards to ears. Whoever mounted your whitetail has a very good understanding of ear anatomy to include nicely re-created earbutts & proper use of the zygomatic arch. The ears are sharp and have the correct anatomy. I can see that the scleral band of the eye was barely shown and was not over exposed. That the taxidermist was able to place one ear back convincingly is also a plus. The proper antler set with a nice dish in the forehead with the bottom lip exposed is also nice to see. The grooming of hair looks good and is correctly groomed toward the ground, not toward the back as you often see.

The only thing that I think could have improved the mount was the paint schedule used on the eyes...had they been painted to look "softer" it would certainly bump the mount up. I would say that you have a very nice mount and should be very proud to display it. Again, just my opinion.

Overheard at my last convention: "If you wanna make a million bucks in taxidermy, start out with 2 million and in 5 years, if you're lucky, you'll have a million left."
