Found a small spike that had both front legs shot out from underneath him laying in the middle of one of our pastures. Nearest property line is about 300 yds away. One leg had the entry hole and it blew out the backside. Did not break the bones but most of the muscle was gone. Offside leg was blown off and just hanging by sinew.
Do you think this deer could jump a 5-wire fence after getting shot?

Possible, but to me almost sounds like poachers, or someone walked away from the "ground shrinkage" That is along way to run with 2 flat tires.

Can't imagine he could have jumped the fence in that condition.

Did you Lille him when you found him or did you leave him there? I assume you meant "kill him". He was dead but it was very recent. As in that morning while we were out. We picked him up and took him to another camp thinking it may be theirs but nobody knew anything about it but they "heard shooting" on the adjoining property. We left it with them in case someone came looking for it as we were going to patch up a blind then head to town for some lunch . By the time we finished with the blind(about 30 min) we drove back past their camp and they had already gutted and skinned it. For it to have come from the adjoining property it would have to get to the fence, jump the five-wire then hobble closer to 500 yards (googleearth). If it was shot on our side of the fence it could have already been in that pasture or there was an open gate it could have gone through a couple of hundred yards to the north (or jump the fence separating the pastures). I know animals can do amazing things when hurt but I just can't imagine it jumping a fence from an adjoining property and then nobody coming to look for it. The adjoining land is almost all pasture and bordered by the hwy on the parallel side (about 500 yards). Not saying it couldn't happen and not calling anyone a liar or a poacher, just trying to figure it out. Just doesn't add up.

Man sounds like a mystery lol. Is there a blood trail at all? Maybe follow the blood train if there is one or see if the ground is kicked up from him dragging himself. Idk buddy

If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Saw a deer get both front legs shot out from under him years ago, and it "bulldozed" it's way over 100yds thru high grass to a grove of trees. There was a very obvious trail to follow though. When it comes to a wounded deer in flight, stranger things have happened.

I have seen the same thing twice. He didnt have to go over the fence, he could have gone through it or under it. I like the idea of trailing it backwards to see exactly where it came from.

Unfortunately I didn't get back to that pasture before it rained.
It most definitely walked to this spot. No signs of bulldozing and no immediately decernable blood trail in the immediate vacinity. Since we figured we knew who's it was I didn't scout around much, just the immediate area.
I guess it could have gone under or through the fence. But to do that and then hobble another 500 yds seems a bit unlikely.
From the layout of the land and whatnot it either seems someone didn't want to fess up about it or it was shot over the fence. The other possibilities fall back to a distant third pretty quickly.
It's all a little frustrating. The sorry little spike needed to be culled but the manner was all wrong. Going to have to pay a little more attention to what and who is happening around the place.

If it were a smaller deer, it could have gone under it as well. I sat there and watched about 5 bucks choose to go under my fence a couple of weeks ago. They were little guys, but it still surprised me.
