New to waterfowl hunting and was woundering how good the duck / teal hunting is at Ray Roberts. If not good is there a better place in the Denton area?

You're in Denton.. Go scout and see for yourself! You won't get much guidance by asking folks to tell you where the ducks are.

nobody's gonna name lakes/public spots around here buddy. I went to college in Denton and I can tell you that there's definitely public teal spots in the area, but I couldn't tell ya where. Good luck. Keep in mind that teal are there one day and gone the next allot of the time.

Ya man. Your not gonna get much love on here asking where to go. Guys spend lots of time (years) finding places that hold ducks. Also if you go on a forum and name a lake ( dont ever do that) you will have every Barney with in 100 miles on top of one another sky blasting any bird in sight. Best thing is make sure the lake, river , ect is open to public hunting. Get the proper permits and scout. Go out a few weeks before your hunt and throw out a few decoys and see what happens. Or find a buddy that hunts and is willing to take you along. Good luck and welcome to the most addicting hunting know to man!

The existence of Ray Roberts is certainly no secret and is probably the most hunted lake in north texas so no harm done, but really for any lake you might have asked about no one really knows unless they scouted it recently.
Teal are here today, gone tomorrow kind of thing. The Lakes around here are different every teal season. Lake levels, weather, food sources, access, hunting pressure, etc. change from year to year and day to day. Even if someone killed teal on a lake last year, that same lake and spot may not have teal on a given day of teal season this year. In fact any spot hunted last year for Teal season is pretty much going to be dry this year.
I did three scouting trips for teal last year and had spots to hunt lined up on 6 different public lakes. All within 2 hours of Dallas. I hunted 4 of those and killed limits on all of them. It's not the lake you want to find it is the Teal and habitat they love. Get out a day as close as you can before your hunt day. Visit as many of the public lakes near Denton you have permits for, drive/walk/boat good looking teal habitat that you can access. Carry binoculars too so you can cover a lot of water and keep moving. Definately scout more than one lake if possible. When you find the teal, look a little closer. Pick a place to make your stand as well as alternates in case of hunting pressure, lake level changes, wind changes, etc.
During season, keep an eye on any of those places you previously scouted that looked promising. If the first hunt don't go well or if you think it over pressured, scout after your hunt. Move your next hunt to the places where you see birds or if short on scouting time, at least you will have areas lined up you scouted previously to move to and away from places you know are not working out.

Best place in Denton is that lake behind the Ben E. Keith building right to the west of I-35 W! No, you can't hunt there, but I remember seeing dozens and dozens of ducks there when I went to North Texas in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
