just wondering what are some of ya'lls hit and miss stories where you got a second chance to shoot. Reason I ask is because I used to hunt in KY and it sounded line WW III on opening morning. just curious as to if ya actually got a second shot and if you connected!!

Yup have connectd with just about every followup shot I have taken on Deer. First deer I ever shot got 4 shots fired at it and all 4 sere through the lungs with a 30-30, I kept shooting long as I could see it. Grewup hunting in Mississippi huntign with dogs for deer and most shots were ar running deer Killed several with the second or third shot in that scenerio

I had to use a follow up on a buck a few years ago. I missed him at 20 yards and he ran like hayl out to about 150 or 160 yds and stopped and I dropped him in his tracks.

It was the biggest buck I'd ever seen at the time and when he came out that close I lost it. Never had buck fever so bad.

I hunt with a single shot, so I'm more into the one shot, one kill mindset!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

That's pretty much how my bow works too.

Don't think the follow-up is uncommon. If you hunt long enough, you'll have less than perfect shots. These aren't always due to bad judgement or lack of skill...it just happens.

When I was young and less experienced I would shoot at running deer. The lessons learned were that this is generally not a very productive manner for harvesting deer.

Nowadays I'm much more patient and I wait for a shot presentation. If I don't get it then I don't shoot. Consequently, I no longer "Shoot at deer", I shoot them.

For me, the close shots are the hardest. I guess I figure it's in the bag and don't follow through with good form. I used to shoot a 3D course where the guy would set several targets in a row at 40 to 50 yards and then throw a Javelina in the shadows at around 18 yards. It's unbelievable how many people (including me) would connect on the long range animals and miss the whole target at close range. Stinkin mind games! blush

I have only shot at the same deer twice one time, it was the biggest buck I have ever shot. I dont know where he came from, I was looking off to my east he came out from the west when I looked back he was just there eating. I Borrowed my dads 280 for that hunt which had a recent trigger job dropping it to 2 lbs, dad said be carefull, so I didnt even put my finger in the guard until I was ready to pull the tigger. I took a neck shot, like I was taught to do and in my amazement the deer didnt fall over, for about 5 second, his head slumped down and he just stood there, I freaked jacked another round in and when I looked back through the scope he was laying on the ground dead I didnt care I shot him again just for good measure!

The other was sitting with my dad when he was hunting. A nice 9pt with some palmation on one side came out, dad made some noise getting the gun up and the deer looked at us, dad took a neck shot and the deer HAULED BUT. We looked for about 20 min and couldnt find blood so we got back in the blind. About 2 hours later we saw a buck chasing a doe below the hill coming our way, dad said dang its that buck again, this time the buck had his neck streached out tailing the doe and he fell at the shot. When we got down to check out the buck, you could see the graze from the first shot that had just cut the hair on the side of his neck. When we got back to camp dad checked the sight and the gun was 3-4 inches off to the right, which made for a miss with the neck up in an alert position, but didnt really matter when his neck was streatched out flat chasing the doe.

Funny things we laugh about now.

Long ago, my Dad and I were hunting on a place where a teenager had been placed in a box blind. This was his first deer hunt so he was told to stay put. Of course he had never killed a deer.

A little while after the Sun came up, it sounded like he was being attacked by a well armed militia. We went over to check on him. He had shot a little buck with his 30-30 and it dropped on the first shot. Fearful that it would get up and run off, he kept shooting at it as it lay there. He had 12 or 14 rounds with him and he shot every one of them at that poor deer. When we got him out of the stand and went to get his deer, he had missed it with every shot except the first one. roflmao
