Has anybody ever used Snake Guard Shields? I just recently bought a new pair of insulated Gortex boots from academy on sale for cheap and now my new lease is full of rattlesnakes so of course im going to need snake protection. I would rather not go out and buy a $200 pair of insulated snake proof boots, but i will if i have too, Thanks for any help!

(these are the Snake Guard Shields) http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_30275_-1?Ntt=snake&Ntk=All

Edit - i just found these - http://www.turtleskin.com/Snake-Gaiters.aspx - anybody have experience with something like this? Thanks!

Snake boots and the various fabric and plastic gators will work.
All are plenty hot I couldn't picture how hot insulated would be.
I don't like snake boots with laces I've had enough get hung up in the laces of my everyday work boots.

In my opinion they're all kinda iffy and give folks a false sense of security they are only 15" ~ 18" tall, which is okay for small to medium size no necks.
Of the biguns that struck at me most would've hit around or above the knee.
Snake chaps that cover from waist or thigh to foot are better.

Those are crap...use Rattlers brand snake chaps--they're heavy kevlar and go up to your waist almost. Great for thorns too.

I do a lot of fieldwork and have been struck a couple times already by water moccasins and these saved my rear... I wouldn't wear anything else!

X2 We have some snake chaps from cabellas not sure of the brand, but they are snake proof and are awsome for the thorns as well as keeping your pants and legs dry from the heavy dew we get all the time in the mornings. Only drawback is in the summer they are hot!

Snake boots for the win. I have had them for years now and they have saved me at least once from a copperhead. Most all snake boots are not insolated, thus being a "snake boot"...(spring, summer and fall boot). Also I buy the zip up. Very easy to slip on and zip. Sometimes I even wear them unzipped. I payed 200 there about for them at Cabelas. The 1st ones I bought were Red Wings, but my newer pair is Irish Settlers. Extreamly comfortable boots that I have put MANY a mile on.

you will hate the shields. I have had all three and prefer the boots. Second choice is chaps

Thanks for all the feedback! I guess im going to bite the bullet and pick up a pair of snake boots, it just sucks that i bought a brand new pair of insulated wolverine hunting boots last year and haven't worn them yet, but I'd rather not get bit, also with the snake boots, will they keep me warm in the winter? I know they are not insulated but from some of the replys, people are saying they are a little warm. Thanks

I have the Turtleskin full coverage chaps as well as the gaiters. Which one I wear depends on where I'm going. The chaps are nice for thick cover and thorns/cactus. By far, they are the lightest and most flexible snake chaps I've had.

I worn them for a couple weeks for work ( I HATED THEM WOUNLD NOT BUY A PAIR NOR WOULD I TELL SOME TO BUY A PAIR ) if you don't have the money to buy a pair of snake boots go to the army navy store and get a pair of leggens. made of canves are lot nicer and will turn a snake.

Many choices. I would want them to go up high in case you get a large snake or a change in topography, climbing hills.

I like the tennis shoe soles

Snake boots are hot and expensive. If you buy boots,,,go with a zip up for sure... I didn't and regret it. I use guards but the chaps are better. LIke being able to take them on and off easy when you go in the house, etc.

My brother in law has these Snake boots and likes them. Any boot is going to be hot in the Summer. I have the zip on snake guards like you mention. The nice thing about them is you can take them off and on easy. They are hot. I wear them over Durashock steel toes when I feel the need. I have learned to be more observant and use the shoot first philosophy. elmer
