Opening day buck. Scored 145. Incredibly, he weighed 230 pounds. That's the biggest deer ever taken on our lease. It's obvious the abundance of food is having an effect on the size of our bucks. They all looked fat and healthy.

Great Eight! Congrats!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

great buck. i think you were lied to. might have weighed 145 but no way it scored that. not trying to be an [censored]. its a nice buck but would have to be a hell of an 8 point to score that high. that deer is right around 130 b&c

Maybe Los Cazadores should calibrate their scales and measuring tape huh... Keep your day job. Those S. Tex deer are deceiving when they weigh that much.

That is an awesome deer Scott. Low fence too. Congratulations! Did you get an age on him? Did your pre-season scouting help you locating him or the area for a new stand? I remember you asking about that earlier this year.

Thanks for the backup txduckman. I guess I need to submit contest photos every time I shoot a deer? Hopefully I can hold 1st place in the Cazadores contest for low fence 8 points. Our ranch manager said 5 1/2 to 6 1/2. Los Cazadores said 6 1/2 +. I don't think he was that old.

My pre-season scouting is actually the only reason I got a look at this deer. We have a funnel on our property that runs between a couple of feeders, a water source, and an oat field. This buck was standing in one of the only openings in this funnel. We had a decent wind out of the north last weekend (it's usually out of the South). I crawled over a ridge adjacent to the funnel. Because of the wind, they had no idea I was there. I had to make a long shot because they were acting like they were about to slip back into cover. Luckily my Rem 7 mag found the mark.

I almost didn't hunt the area because the previous morning my brother shot 5 young pigs under a feeder that was 200 yards from where I shot this buck.

Thanks again for all the comments. Hopefully I will be posting again soon with another picture of an even bigger deer.

SK

I took him Sunday morning of opening weekend.

Nice 8. If you don't hunt S. Texas, it's hard to judge those deer.

i had no idea that they weighed that much. i have friends that hunt mason county and deer down there are really small. are you further south by mexico. that is a heck of a deer by the way. it looks even bigger than the first picture you posted. when did you kill it? what did it score?

is the 230lbs field dressed?

It's not skybusting, if you make the shot.
