I've been bugging my husband to take me hunting with him. I'm a pretty good shot at the range, so no worries there. I like being outdoors & love fishing, so I felt this would be my next outdoorsy step. I'm attending the required hunter education course this weekend.
Any tips for a first time woman hunter? I know I've gotta stay quite & no smelly good stuffs.

Welcome Laura, up cheers Join in the campfire. Pick you up a TPWD hunting fish regulation book at Walmart and study it.

Visit TPWD web site. Might want to look at the TPWD drawing hunts booklet, & Annual Hunting Permits lands, if you dont have a lease or land.

Make a trip to the Wildlife Ranch at Glenrose and study the game and interaction. But they are Captive game. Good luck

Get ready for the Hunters Education Class,

I'm not sure if it was the fact I had already been shooting for 17 years and hunting for 15, or if it was because the two instructors where just not that lively. But that was the longest 10 hours of my life, I mean seriously if people think water boarding is torture they have never sat through one of these guys Hunter Education classes.

In all honesty though for somebody whom is new to the sport it is very informative and you will probably learn a lot.

Hunting is not really that hard, but then again I'm not a hardcore hunter either. I drive to my stand with a couple of Dr Peppers and Snacks, listen to my Mp3 player or even take my laptop some days.

The best advice is don't get discouraged if you don't see stuff or don't get to kill something, and the preparation of hunting is just as fun to me. Going and scouting locations, finding tracks and evidence, clearing lanes, setting feeders and game cams things of that nature.

Well I'm rambling so I will cut it off, Welcome to the THF and welcome to a very rewarding Sport stick with it up

Hunters Ed is easy. Take the online test and if you can pass that you can pass the real test.

Hey Laura, so far you're off to the right start. Learn to shoot well. Practice more positions than just shooting off the bench and get comfortable with your rifle. Attending the Hunter's Ed will be good. Finally, study deer anatomy so you can put that bullet right in the vitals from a variety of angles and distances.

When out in the field, move slow, stay quiet, and watch the wind at all times.

Welcome! You will have a blast. My wife hunts with me some, and took her first buck last year with one good shot.

love to have in the sport with us laura. you are on the right path, how hard you hunt is up to you as tac said above i don,t think it should be so hard it takes the fun out of it,when bow hunting i am stealthly, but with a rife in the box blind i may kick back with a good book ,looking up scaning area ever now and then, as said above a lot of the chores of hunting i enjoy seting out game cameras and looking at what i get on them, mainly work at suscess but have fun and enjoy the outdoors

The memories you make hunting are like no other. They will be seared into your memory in a way that will not be tarnished by the passing years. This is a good place for advice. But, it's an even better place to share some of those memories.

welcome

My only advice would be to make sure you follow all the laws.........AND HAVE A GREAT TIME! Your husband is a lucky man. I wish my wife enjoyed hunting and would go with me!

Oh, hope you get a great deer!

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Welcome to the club Laura, there's still time for you to get out, once you get sucked into this thing it becomes an obsession!Your husband is a lucky man,my wife will not even squash a bug, growing up in New Braunfels though she was around deer and hunting her whole life, once gun season starts she knows where I'll be and she is fine with that,I'm a lucky man in that regard.Best wishes and good hunting.

welcome Glad to have ya!

Need more women in this venture. My wife has been hunting with me since before we got married. Part of our honeymoon was at the lease we were on outside of San Saba. It was her idea! She's a rifle hunter, but did carry a bow and backpack all over the area around Cimmaron,CO with me for a few years. She's my bestest huntin & fishin buddy! cheers

She called the Hunter's Ed her "Eatin Sticks" class. Didn't need it here but had to have it for Colorado. rofl

Not much else to say that hasn't been said other than this: Be prepared for your husband to be frustrated with you at times just b/c you will make the same mistakes we all have made. Just be patient with him. Been there with my wife while teaching her to hunt and shoot. Also, enjoy the time together. Sometimes, just being together without saying anything can be the best experience in the world and can pay dividends in your marriage.

Great to see another female enjoying the outdoors! You've been given some great advice already. If y'all are lucky enough to live very near the place you will hunt, I would suggest you go out there now and start just learning the property boundaries. You need to know what's beyond the trees/hills/ponds you will be shooting towards. up

I passed my class with a 92 today. I will be getting my hunting license soon (Aug 15.) Now I just need a place to go hunt hogs. That's what I really want to do. Ya'll let me know if you know of a place for me to go. I'm a broke momma, so I can't pay alot. Thanks for all of your comments & well wishes!

Welcome aboard. If you get a chance to do any deer hunting, don't forget your binoculars. Not for deer, but for bird watching. I find that just as interesting. Some may disagree...

x2,also binoculars give you5-10 more shooting minutes, you need to stay in the stand until you cant see with the naked eye,a lot of bigger deer wait until the last minute to walk out, looking through the scope gets very tiring very fast.Nikon monarchs are a good choice for starting out-$150.00 or so ,ask for them for christmas, once you start using them you wont want to put them down.

My wife went deer hunting with me for the first time last season, although she wasn't interested in shooting but just watching instead. We both had a blast.

Lots of good advice in the posts above. Be safe, if youre not sure about something ask. Good luck and have fun!

Well, my dear, do not worry! Just relax yourself while you are fishing. The only thing you need to do for fishing is being patient. But make sure that you have taken all the fishing equipments with your before you fishing out~~~~ Nice fishers are always more patient than others. So what you have to do is just calm down and wait for your first fish. Remember that do not hang out at your fishing destinations. Good Luck!!!
