I am going to have to build a trap for hogs on my deer lease. Last year I counted 70+ hogs in one herd and took a couple out with a rifle. I am afraid to see how many there are this year. I'm seeing a lot more signs than last year.

The problem is that I cannot kill and eat them faster than they reproduce. Also, I cannot bring anyone else to hunt.

I am going to be forced to build a large trap/pen to capture as many as possible. I don't mind killing them but really hate to just kill them if someone is in need of or wants the meat. I know it's illegal to transport them now, unless transporting to a processing facility.

So, is anyone here interested in the meat? Or, do any of you have a better idea of what to do with them besides just killing and dumping them?

Hman I know what your talking about, my place wich is between Saint Jo and Forestburg is starting to get over run with them. Weve never had hogs for over 18yrs until this year. There are a couple places that you can take them and get paid really well for them if they are alive. I know my neighbor told me about a place in Cisco that is buying hogs at 50 cents a pound. There's also a place in a town about 15min. west of Jacksboro in a little town called Germyn(I think thats how you spell it) that buys them for somewhere around the same. The guy in Germyn is big time into hog trapping. He works for a company that comes and picks the pigs up and ships them over seas some where. You can make some good money if you have the time to do it. Hell at 50cents a pound a 100lb pig brings you $50. I rarely see pigs that are any smaller then that most of the time. Wow just think if you could take five pigs at 200lb a piece to the Hog processor a week thats $500. I not for sure how much the price per pound changes, but if you wanted to you can make some decent money. Ok sorry for ranting on so long, good luck to ya with the piggies!

Let them lay. That's what TPWD does.

Another option and it releaves you from any hassles.

There's a guy in our town that brings the traps out, baits them, checks them everyday and hauls away the hogs...ALL FOR FREE TO YOU.

He sells them to ranches that offer hog hunts. Ask around your area for someone that does similiar work. Feed store is a good place to ask.

Some of you folks need to check out the link that dogcatcher listed. There have been some new rules that are a lot stricter on moving trapped hogs around that have went into affect during the past 6 months.

Yes it is, but because of the fact that feral hogs can be carriers of both bruecellosis and Pseudo-rabies, TAHC and TDA, want to get a handle on things.

Texas dept. of agriculture and the Cattle Industry in Texas have spent a whole lot of time/effort/energy and $$$ to get Texas a bruecellosis free rating, they do not intend on losing that.

Do you foresee TPWD putting a limit and/or a season on feral hogs in Texas? I've heard and ready guys saying they think it will come to that...something about TPWD seeing it as another avenue to make some money.

I really don't think they will, and hope like hell they don't.

From what I have heard from biologists, something like 60% of the population would have to be taken out every year to even come close to managing the things.

Miss one year or maybe even 6 months goal and we would be back to square one.

Would I like to see feral hogs be managed and made into a game animal, yes, if it was doable.

As is stands right now, the numbers need to be pulled down to less than 100 thousand animals state wide, and kept at 250,000 or less yearly. JMO.

Was 60 cents and up depending on how many pounds they weighed. I think they do ALOT of business there. I'll make a phone call tonight and find out.
