My son drew a permit in the youth only javelina hunt at the Chaparral WMA in February. We have never hunted these before and also never been to Chaparral. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Also, what will the weather be like Feb. 9 & 10. Thanks in advance.

My son did two hunts down there a couple of years ago. Take some corn with you. They usually allow baiting on the youth hunts. If you are lucky enough to be put in an area that has some javelina, you'll have a shot op, just by spreading corn along the sendero on the way to the stand. Weather is anybody's guess. It could be in the 80's or down in the 30's. They have a pretty good area for primative camping, and a seperate one for RV's. How old is the boy? If you have a pop-up blind, take it with you, just in case you don't like the blind provided. Feel free to PM me with any other questions you might have. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. tgil. My son is 9 and this will be his first year to try and harvest anything. We plan on taking a tent and just roughing it. He's excited about that too.

IMO they are a lot like hogs... they travel in packs (or whatever they're called in groups) and can be aggressive if they feel as though something is going to harm their offspring... they don't seem to make as much noise as hogs though - and when you clean them, be sure to get that scent gland off quick, or skin the whole thing quickly and take off the scent gland with it...
they'll eat the heck out of corn, so if they allow baiting, take some with you...

tgil gave about as good a set of answers as there is. There are javelina spread out all over the Chap, but some compartments are better than others. Follow what tgil says and your boy should do fine. Good Luck and let us know the results, with pictures PLEASE. Congratulations on getting drawn. Javelina are IMO the best "First" animal for any beginning hunter. A white tail rack is not going to impress everybody, no matter the size. I have never met a person that was not impressed by the dental works of a good javelina. J.M.O.

I did a Javelina hunt at the Chap a few years back. Weather was cool/cold if I remember about that time of the year. Chap is a high fenced WMA and I saw more deer than Javelina when I was hunting. Of course deer season was closed. You'll have to be out early and late to catch the Javelina moving through the high brush. Look for water holes and keep eyes on game trails. Javelina have real bad eyesight but excellent smell. I walked up on a small group to within 20yds by moving only when they moved. The high brush/scrub of the Chap is challenging to hunt so movement is key. I must've walked 5 miles a day through my compartment looking for the stinkpigs. We saw more Javelina toward nightfall and our flashlights were excellent to spot the eyes as they were moving through the brush. Good luck...
