I just started using my first set of Redding dies and when I FL size going up the ram it feels very rough. It seems almost scratchy when I FL resize, if that makes sense. Any suggestions what could be causing this or is that just how the dies feel?

Don't forget to lube your cases. They only make Carbide for straight wall brass. Rifle brass needs to be lubed , even if its brand new cases, you have to re-size the brass.

I have a few sets of Redding dies and none act as you describe. Are your cases scratched any after sizing?

Are you using new brass? With new brass you might want to use a deburring tool to remove any burrs from the outside of the case neck and then also chamfer the inside of the case neck to remove any burrs. Also, are the the S series dies that use bushing?

Varget, so this brass has already been fire-formed to your Rifle ? If so, then just back off your FL die and just neck size your brass. Just stay off the shoulder . Use a magic marker or if you don't have one ...try masking tape ...a piece and burn smoke your brass. good luck .

Did you try removing the expander button for a case or two to see if it is rubbing. I know you said on the upstroke and the expander button should not interfere.

Xcal, another member here on the forum sent me some once fired so I'm just FL sizing it for my rifle. Rifle, which one's the expander button? Sorry new to nice dies, I was suing Lee before

It is the part you should be able to unscrew from the full length sizing die. Its purpose is to open up the resized case neck to the appropriate diameter. On bottleneck cases as you are resizing you might want to get some lube inside the case neck to ease the expander button passage on the downstroke of the handle. Some mfg offer carbide expander buttons for this reason.

Rifle, I took the expander button out and it didn't feel rough anymore. shortly after I got a case stuck and destroyed to expander button accidentally so I'm gonna have to call and hopefully get a new one.

Varget, what .30 Cal said is right. sorry that you had an ,.oops. I've done that and been there. Re-loading is fun once you get all the kinks out. Also remember, too much lube can also cause you headaches and crunched cases, bulges etc.

Yeah I had a couple of crunched case cause I was impatient and didn't let the lube dry. I emailed Redding so hopefully I can get a new button. I most bought the set for the neck sizer and seater so I'm thinking about getting a Lee FL sizer cause I've almost always had good experiences with them.

I use Imperial case lube. My procedure is to lightly swipe my finger across it, rub it on my thumb and then twirl the case between my thumb and forefinger just enough to show the lube on the case and then I sort of rub my finger across the case neck to get a small amount inside the neck. This usually slicks them up plenty for everyday sizing. I also have a Forster dry-lube kit that uses Mica and case-neck brushes to clean and lube the necks. this seems to work well also and you don't have to worry about cleaning the lube out of the necks. FWIW, if the problem persists after lubing the necks, you may want to either send the die back to Redding or try using some 0000 steel wool and extra-fine valve compound to polish the expander. Not trying to be a smart-axx or anything, but in case you don't know the procedure, during the resizing process the expander goes into the already expanded (from firing) case mouth and the pin punches out the fired primer. Still on the down-stroke, the sizer "squeezes" the neck back down to a few thousandths below bullet dia. and then the expander sizes it back out to its' final dia. as it's being pulled out of the case neck. This should be .001-.002 under the bullet dia. to allow for enough neck tension to hold the bullet in place. The seater die can also apply a crimp if set for it.
Old age ain't for sissies!

If they are new dies, makes sure you clean em before using them, they lube the insides with some pretty heavy stuff to protect em, make sure you get all that junk out of em before FL sizing.

I thoroughly wash out new dies with carb or brake clean before use.
I think a call to Redding is in order.

I did clean the die but maybe not well enough. I'll have to use some brake cleaning stuff now.

In addition to all of the good comments above, when you spray the One Shot, make sure to spray the inside of the case necks. I put them on a loading block, spray the bodies and inside of necks at a 45 degree angle, rotate the block 180 degrees, and spray the necks and bodies again from a 45 degree angle. Also, I tumble my brass before sizing to make sure it is clean and free from grit, chamber crud, powder residue, which helps keep the sizing die and brass in good condition. I tumble it again after trimming it to knock off the lube and any burrs or shavings. Hope that helps.

So I spoke with Redding and they sent me a new expander button, this one works spectacular! I don't know if maybe the other was too large or what it could have been but this one is great!

Redding's customer service was incredible too! AJ was who I was communicating with and he was very knowledgeable. I'll definitely be buying from them again.
