yes it is 7.62x51 is the Nato designation for the cartridged the outside dimensiions are identical to .308 win but the brass is a lil thicker and uselly is a lil hihgher in pressure on loaded ammo. The DPMS has a 7.62x51 chamber which means it is safe to fire it and .308 out of it, most manufacturers will say that if it is a .308 win chamber they do not advise shooting 7.62x51 out of it.

Dee's spot on. I went through the same thing a while back. Good luck and safe shooting.

so if you want to shoot both cartrages, it is best to go with the 7.62x51 chamber, correct?
are there any benefits going with the 7.62 over the .308 other than being able to shoot both cartrages?

It is recomended that if you plan on shooting both to opt for the 7.62 chamber but there aren't a lot of bolt guns out there that give you that choice. Now gas guns are different most are gonna be like your ar's and have the military chamber so you can use surplus ammo.

AR10 is what I am looking at getting. I guess the 7.62 is what I will go with, while 99% will be .308 at least I have the option of shooting the 7.62.

Thanks

DEE covered it. All commercial 308 ammo I have shot has been hotter than 7.62

But yes its safe to shoot both in modern AR type firearms, and AR is the only time you will find this chamber anyway. It is not safe to shoot 5.56 though in a 223, MUCH higher pressure.
