dont know who you got that info from. whitney is pretty good. if you are willing to go the extra mile you will enjoy public hunting. its not for the lazy hunter.

Agree with Mocreepus1. If you hunt public land, you must first apply for a permit to hunt the particular area you are interested in. Permits are usually free through the Corp of Engineers. Be prepared to walk...a lot. No vehicles of any kind are allowed on Corp land. Be prepared to carry a load, because you have to carry out everything you carry in each day. There are no permanent blinds allowed. Practice shooting your bow, because rifles are not allowed....archery only
If you are a bow hunter, and you don't mind carrying 25 lbs of corn and a 50 lbs backpack/pop-up-blind 2 miles each direction, then you will enjoy hunting public land.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.usYou can find everything about public hunting from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website. Contact each area's local biologist and you will get an honest opinion of what the hunting is like. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/wma/I think most, or all, Wildlife Management Area hunts are by draw and may be archery only, but it is a great opportunity for a chance at a nice buck. Hope you find success.
A bad day hunting is better than a good day doing anything else.

I think the draw for the WMA hunts has expired. Something to think about for next year.

And I was just thinking the other day how bad I was going to miss Lake Whitney this year since I was one of the shunned hunters this year, but your post has me happy I won't be carrying all that crap in and out again. I will next year though. As far as public hunting, Whitney is good, Caddo is good and I have heard Sulphur Springs is a nice spot also.

LBJ is excellent its probably a little over 2 hrs to hunt but plenty of good campsites. Weekdays no problem finding one busy on weekends. But I have been hunting there over 20 years with Dad and brother and we have taken well over 50 bucks and even more doe. The deer are tough to hunt due to the pressure but you will see plenty. Antler restrictions make it tough to get a buck but they are there. Plenty of spikes and doe. You can get a doe all during bow season but only 4 days during Thanksgiving. No permit required to hunt it just your license. Wal-mart will try to sell you it but it's not needed no matter what your told. You must wear orange vest and hat though of course. If you need more info PM me.

do you have to wear orange while bow hunting? you are required to have it. but most places allow you to take it off once you get to your hunting spot. just wear it in and wear it out.
