I keep reading posts about people have clogging problems with protein in spin feeders. I have been using the rain guard protein pellets for the last two years and have yet to have a single clog in 7 different feeders. Are the people posting not using the rain guard or am I just lucky?
I did try the Sportsmans Choice golden deer nuggets and they are too big to go through the funnel. Not real fun using a cup to empty a 300 pound barrel of small deer nuggets.

I have used AntlerMax protein in corn feeders and it has clogged them up. I guess you are lucky.

I am currently using the Sportsmans Choice Record Rack - Professional. I bought 50 pound bags last weekend for $7.80 a bag. I have filled my one gravity feeder with half corn and half Record Rack and they will finish off the pellets first before touching the corn.

It usually depends upon the size of the funnel opening that will make the pellets/nuggets clog. An 1.5" opening WILL most of the time, but a 2" opening will allow all grains/pellets to fall through with ease.
With spincast feeders, you're really going to have to let your spin time go at least 10 seconds or more and have your spin plate lowered to allow enough protein to cast out for optimum utilization and benefit. Otherwise, use a gravity feeder.

kyotee is right! your just spinning your wheels if your not feeding protein free choice. it's called supplemental feeding, which means your supplementing whats not available naturally. It don't work if you ration it by using timed feeders.

I had a free choice feeder emptied in two nights by hogs this past season. I didn't fill it back up. My hogs are plenty big already! I'll try to go back to the drawing board before putting it out again. I'm thinking about planting some food plots the next go around.

According to Texas A&M's Dr. James Jensen, et al, free choice feeding is the ONLY way to go if you want to make an impact with supplemental protein. Where hogs and cattle are a problem, encircle your feeder with 5-6 16' hog panels pegged with t-posts every 8'. Now, you only have to worry about coons getting to your protein!
Food plots are a great idea and deer will usually utilize them over supplemental protein sources if given a choice. Remember though, if your Texas property is west of I-35, you will have to irrigate for dependable forage production, thus making for even more labor--but this is what the off-season's for, right? The Ag Extension Service is a good source of info for your specific area. Dave
