Haven't had Versus in quite a while so haven't watched any recent shows. Versus is on back on Direct TV now I am able to catch up on some of the hunting shows. Recently saw that Tred Barta was in a wheelchair and said that he was now parapalegic. May have happened a while back but I was curious how and when it happened. He was still giving it hell in a blizzard fishing in a wheelchair.

it was a rare disease that caused him to lose control of his legs.

there had been talk of him recovering to some extent

have not seen anything in a while

God bless him and his recovery.
while he may not be for everybody, i sure appreciate his fighting spirit.

Stuff my dad said in the deer blind

"I can dive deeper and come up drier"
"did you do that?"

some people dont like him, but damn i hope I have that energy and passion for success at his age. He has more energy now then I do at 24. And its unfortunate that happened, especially to someone so successful and who loves to be adventurous and do everything the hard way. He now really has to do it the hard way. God bless him, it shows how how quick it can all be taken away from us.

yeah he had a spinal stroke from what i was told he was getting ready to hunt and he just lost all movement in his legs on the land he was hunting when it all happened. i saw some video of him in his hospital bed with his bow still practicing. hope the best for the guy.

Unfortunately, they think there will be no recovery. He has to learn to deal with the hand god dealt him. And so far he has done an awesome job. I had the pleasure to hunt with him right before all of this happened, and have also had the pleasure of doing some stuff with him afterward. He is not letting anything slow him down. He now just has to rely more on his friends and family to make his adventures come true. He is a great guy and an inspiration to all outdoorsmen. Oh by the way he shoots his long bow just as good now if not better.

Tred is my favorite. I love his passion. I was unaware of his condition but I did watch a show about 2 weeks ago and saw him in the wheelchair. He was deep sea fishing and landed a marlin on either 4 or 6lb test line. It was pretty cool, hope he recovers.

Watching him fly fish in a blizzard and then they rolled him in the stream with his feet in buckets... He may not be able to use his legs but there is no shortage of balls. I like him better than ever.

I've never heard of his condition so I looked it up. Here's a short blurb if anyone is interested.

What is Spinal Cord Infarction?

Spinal cord infarction is a stroke either within the spinal cord or the arteries that supply it. It is caused by arteriosclerosis or a thickening or closing of the major arteries to the spinal cord. Frequently spinal cord infarction is caused by a specific form of arteriosclerosis called atheromatosis, in which a deposit or accumulation of lipid-containing matter forms within the arteries. Symptoms, which generally appear within minutes or a few hours of the infarction, may include intermittent sharp or burning back pain, aching pain down through the legs, weakness in the legs, paralysis, loss of deep tendon reflexes, loss of pain and temperature sensation, and incontinence.

Is there any treatment?

Treatment is symptomatic. Physical and occupational therapy may help individuals recover from weakness or paralysis. A catheter may be necessary for patients with urinary incontinence.

What is the prognosis?

Recovery depends upon how quickly treatment is received and how severely the body is compromised. Paralysis may persist for many weeks or be permanent. Most individuals have a good chance of recovery.

Been a fan for years. I tuned in to his first show back on the water. He was in Central America (IIRC) again and had just been there a few months prior to his illness. He was back to go after sail fish again.

It was a tough show to watch. You could really sense Tred's frustration. Everyone could. The boat's captain even called in a friend of Tred's to wisk him away and do some shotgunning after the first day just to break the tension.

By the end of the show, you could see that Tred seemed to be making peace with his physical limitations. And was developing a new metal approach to things. Good for him.

Hope I never get tested like that.......

At least he wasn't always trying to sell you a bunch of stuff, just hunting.

I beleive he is the only hunting show that VS owns the full rights to, meaning he has no sponsors he has to mention. I know his hat he wears while hunting, had the name of a large hunting store on it and he cut out the name.
