Bought a Winchester 94 30-30 off the forum today. Just wondering what some of y'alls max range is with open sights. I'll have to go shoot it of course but I was thinking that I'd be pretty comfortable shooting game out to 75 yards with the open sights. We'll see.

Shooting at a hog? About a 100 yards. Deer, a little less than that.

But that's just me, you may shoot better Davey Crockett.

Prolly not, lol. I am not that experienced with open sights. I had the same gun before but it had a scope. I don't plna on putting a scope on this one though.

75 yds is reasonable, you'll be able to stretch
that a bit with practice. If you're set on not
putting a scope on it one of the after market
peep or ghost ring sights might help.

+2 on the peep sights, those are perfect for 30-30's IMO. Good for busting pigs at night as well.

i can do about a 2" to 3" grouping standing up at 50 yards. Beyond that I am pretty inconsistent with open sights on a 30-30. that's why i put a scope on mine.

How will you put ascope on a 94 when it ejects from the top of the reciever?

They make a side mount for the 94's

they are offset to the side and hideous looking IMO.

If it's a '94AE (angle eject) a scope can be mounted
over the receiver. cbump doesn't say it is but they've
been made that way for several years now.
I've got a 4x mounted on mine. When/if I break down and
treat myself to another centerfire I'll take it off and
mount an XS Sight (ghost ring) on it.
I've already bought it.

Yep, I agree with that.

And besides, you wouldn't see John Wayne with any scopes on his lever actions, why would you!?!??

Same as any other hunting rifle, taking as much
advantage of the accuracy as possible.
With a scope the 30-30 goes from a 75-100 yd rifle
to a 175-200 yd rifle.

I understand that, I just think the 94's look great with just iron sights. I have one in 44 mag that I love.

I've heard that the Hornady Lever Revolution ammo can significantly increase range. Just what I heard.

I shoot the hornady leverevoulution out of my Marlin 336 and my model 94. Very accurate and very impressive wound channels. Marlin has got a 4X scope and I can shoot a 2 inch group on a bench at a hundred yards. The 94 is open sight and at a hundred yards on a bench it is still pretty tight groups but nothing like a scoped rifle. The ammo is worth giving a try. Just my expirence.

If I said how cheap I got that rifle you would call me a liar!

About four years ago I had a New England single shot .223 with a cheap bushnell scope on it. A friends friend was at my house and seen I had it in my truck, where I always kept it. He popped off about trading me a 94 for it even, and he was serious. I even told him that there was a big price difference between the guns, and he didn't care.

So traded a gun I paid $150 for, for a 94 in 44mag. It's in 90% condition and works perfect!

I have a '94 Texas Ranger Commemorative edition 30-30 with a sort of buckhorn-style sight system. I feel comfortable with dropping anything under 100 offhand, 175 with a rest.

I have gotten significantly better accuracy with that new Hornady lever revolution round as compared to the standard Winchester silver box. i use the scope cause it does increase my effective range. Besides I have a 336 and it doesn't look too John Wayne-ish so the scope doesn't bother me. BUt my old 94 doesnt have a scope. Guess which one i hunt with?

With my 22yo Marlin 336, I could get pretty consistent 2" grouping out to 50yds and all over the place at 100yds with open site. Put a scope on it and I bagged a nice doe at 160yds using 150gr Rem Core Lockt last year. Took both her lungs and heart out but she still ran 80yds before she collapsed. The funny thing was that she ran right at me after getting hit. Took three more shots at her but as it turned out I missed them all and I needn't bothered as the first one did her in.

in mine i would shoot to about 50-60 yards with open sights.

imo a wichester looks better with out a scope, a 336 looks better with one.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
