If not recommend, a caliber.
Thinking 33 nosler, 30 nosler or 338 edge. Building on a savage action myself.

There must be a forum in an alternate universe where they'll urge you not to build a rifle. I don't think we're in THAT universe.

If I had the money, I'd get an AI AT in 6.5 creedmoor and be done with it.

I love diy projects of all sorts such as working on stuff for the house and now light home gunsmithing.
I say go for it all the way. I have a savage with a simple barrel upgrade to shilen and an decent stock. It shoots better than I could have imagined. However, because it's a savage I want to accurize at home with simple tools myself. Really looking forward to installing an aftermarket recoil and then bedding a few spots. Final touch was to bed my scope base at the rear contact point. I think I can do all this in my home shop and even at my novice level of shooting and reloading I'm expecting to see some improvement. Sometimes guns are about the journey and not the destination. Build it, build it, built!
I mean. What a waste of your time and efforts.

First thing that comes to mind for me without knowing your background.... do you already have a rifle chambered in a normal/non-exotic/affordable round that facilitates frequent practice? because boutique rounds like this don't check that box.

No one else responded to his request, I did. The O.P. made the request, not I. If responding to his request merits a "Time Out"... go for it!

I like toying with them. Never shot a 30 caliber. The 28 nosler seems to beat the 30s with the 796 and 755 bc.
Also being my first build, I built the 28 no sleep a ttad heavier than I like. The 6.5 creedmoor is perfect.
Some articles have me questioning the 195 terminal performance and the 180 eldm is unproven(not many elk kills). The 215 Berger in a 30 nosler has my eye.
Some think the 30 cal is a better elk killer. I have been reading acticles all weekend.
I lost the bid on the action so I’m looking again. Looking for a large shank la savage.
I think I like developing load more than shooting.

30 Norma Mag is worth a look for your intended purpose. It is a legit long range player. It will shoot with the 338 Lapua. It was built around, and will launch a 230 Berger at 3,000 fps.
