I want to get a similar rifle soon, probably chop down my 26" 308 to 16-18" some day since I have other long range rifles now.

Even still, I might not do it an get a ruger american Hunter in 308. I think when it comes to hunting, especially less than a few hundred yards, 308 may be the best overall choice.
